John 13:34–35 LOVING ONE ANOTHER
2
Peter 4:8 (ESV) Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.
3
John 15:12 (ESV) “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
4
Ephesians 4:1–3 (ESV) 1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
5
Satan tries to Destroy Love In churches Between churches In Towns In Families, Spouses, Childre
6
I.A Closer Look John 13:34–35 (ESV) — 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
7
What is the New command? A new command I give you: love one another. Old Testament Law sot to lead us to Christ Move from the law to Love This new way was so “all men will know you are my disciples.”
8
Paul’s Writing Romans 13:8–10 (ESV) — 8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law
9
A New Apologetic (observable love)
10
John 17:20–21 (ESV) 20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
11
How do you determine is someone is Christian? By their doctrine By their fruit
12
How does the World determine that a person is a Christian? By their love for one another By their love even of others who differ in denomination
13
John 17:20–21 (ESV) 20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” We must always give honest answers to questions. Give an apologetic-Argument for the truth.
14
What is the final apologetic? The love that true Christians show for each other and not just for their own party! Jesus gave the world a valid method of determining true Christianity. It is the love of God shown to other Christians first (Not just those in my tribe) and secondly to the world.
15
What is true oneness in Christ? We are to show God’s holiness and God’s Love. Only holiness leads only to harshness Only love leads to compromise and accepting anything Godly love does not excuse sin.
16
What is Visible Love? “I’m Sorry” Forgiveness is essential (Observable love) If the world does not see “I’m sorry.” And forgiveness granted, they have every right to conclude: John 13-we are not Christians John 17-Christ was not sent by the father
17
II.As I have loved you, so you must love one another (John 13:34b) Passover Example John 13:1 (ESV) — 1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. They asked who would sit on his right hand or left hand At this time, they were ready to fight for the throne, not throw in the towel.
18
60 years later 1 John 3:16 (ESV) By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
19
III.All Men will know that you’re my disciples if you love one another Many disciples in the day Jesus is the God-man Savior of the World
20
They could demonstrate who He really was through their love for one another. John 17:23 (ESV) I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. Clarified 1 John 4:11–12 (ESV) — 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. What is observable Love?
21
IV.SATAN’S COUNTER STRATEGY Trying to create unity in false religions in order to attract people away from the Gospel. Tries to destroy true love and unity within the true church of Jesus Christ. Ephesians 4:3 (ESV) eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
22
V.In the family, the church in miniature Unconditional love 1 John 3:11 (ESV) For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. Ephesians 5:25 (ESV) Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, What about wives Ephesians 5:1–2 (ESV) — 1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
23
Total Family—We are to love one another Love does not mean condoning sin Love does mean winning a person back to Christ and His truths Have a deep attachment for one another
24
Romans 13:8 (ESV) Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
