Operation: Enduring Freedom 2001- A Nicholas Kostecki Presentation:

Definition: The official name used by the U.S., for our involvement in the War in Afghanistan. Military operation launched by the U.S., and the U.K. in response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Purpose was to capture Osama Bin Laden, destroy al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban regime, which provided al-Qaeda with support, and safe haven.

Role of the United States: 6 days after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Pres. Bush identified Osama Bin Laden as the main suspect. Main role was to make it clear to the Taliban that harboring terrorists is not acceptable, prevent the use of Afghanistan as a safe haven for terrorists, and destroy the Taliban regime allowing opposition forces to succeed in their struggle. Also they wanted to capture Osama Bin Laden, and other Al Qaeda leaders as well as take down Al Qaeda training camps and infrastucture. Following that the U.S., was to make sure to deliver humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan. The U.S. and U.K. Led the aerial bombing and ground forces primarily led by Afghan Northern Alliance. Initial attack removed Taliban from power, but Taliban is gaining power...

Al-Qaeda and the Taliban's Role: Al- qaeda: Masterminds in 9/11 attack. Led by Osama Bin Laden. Taliban was harboring Al-Qaeda terrorist camps, and infrastructure. Taliban held control of the government (1996-2001) until U.S.& U.K launched the attack.

If the United State hadn't gotten invovled: Could put the U.S. At a higher risk of terrorist attacks. Taliban would have suppressed the citizens of Afghanistan of rights even longer.

Facts: Coalition Casualties: ~955. More than 575,000 metric tons of food have been delivered since the start of the war. Began Oct. 7, 2001, and is still going.
