Goal 1. You should review how to use absolute values to add two integers. u In this lesson you will study the rules for adding two integers. Adding Integers

u Rule 1. 1. To add two integers with the same sign, sign, add their absolute values and write the common sign. ADDING TWO INTEGERS ADDING TWO INTEGERS u Examples u 3 + 4 = 7 u -2 + (-6) = -8

u Rule 2. 2. To add two integers with different signs, signs, subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger absolute value. Write the answer with the sign of the larger absolute value. Example 2 Adding Integers with Different Signs a. The sum of 5 and -8 is negative because -8 has a greater absolute value. ä 5 + (-8) = - 3 Subtract 5 from 8. Write sign of - 8.

Goal 3- You should learn how to simplify expressions by adding like terms. In the expression -5 x + 2 x + 4, the numbers -5 and 2 are the coefficients of x. The terms -5 x and 2 x are like terms because their variable parts are the same. Adding Like Terms
