EVERYDAY MATH GRADE 4 Lesson 4.3 Comparing and Ordering Decimals Objective: To guide students as they compare and order decimals in tenths and hundredths.
2
ORDERING DECIMALS How would we order decimals? For example.. If I had the following numbers, .38.386.45.9.143 How would I put them in order from least to greatest? FIRST – I would look at the TENTHS place number. I would put those into order. .143.38 &.386.45.9
3
LIKE ALPHABETIZING WORDS This is similar to alphabetizing, in that if I order words such as Bite, buzz, buffet, and beam I would begin with the first letter (b) and note that they are all the same. Then I would go to the second letter and order from there.. Beam, bizz, buffet & buzz Then I would go to the next letter and order them. I only need to order the two words that have similar lettering. Beam, bite, buffet, buzz (because f in buffet, comes before z in buzz)
4
.143.38 &.386.45.9 Then I would look at the HUNDREDTHS place digit. Then the thousdandths place if needed. .143.380.386.45.9 Note the added 0 after the.38. I did this to keep track of my place value digits. I know that 0 is less than 6 so it comes first when ordering from least to greatest. You try! .456.45.386.490.543
5
GREATER THAN AND LESS THAN How would you show that.3 >.15 ? Open your math workbooks to Page 82 Using base 10 blocks – show.3 and.15.3 is 3/10 and 3 longs on the blocks..15 is 15/100 and it is 15 cubes. Since 3 longs is more than 15 cubes,.3 is greater than.15 Use base 10 blocks to complete this page.
6
HOW DO YOU CONVERT FRACTIONS TO DECIMALS? NOTE: In your math ISN’s you all have a foldable that tells you how to do this. The fractions ¾ ⅚ ⅙ ⅖ ⅞ ⅝ ⅜ Can be converted to decimals by dividing the denominator (the bottom number) into the numerator (the top number) 3/4=.75 1/6= ¼ =.252/5= ½ =.507/8=
7
HOW DO YOU CONVERT ? If you have a decimal, how do you convert back to a fraction? Place your decimal over the number 1. For example.75 becomes.75/1 Multiply both the numerator and the denominator by 100 (because the decimal goes into the hundredths place) .75 = 75Now we have the fraction 75/100 1 = 100 Simplify this fraction as many times as necessary.. You will get ¾. Visit http://www.mathsisfun.com/converting-decimals-fractions.html for a nicely done example!http://www.mathsisfun.com/converting-decimals-fractions.html
8
HOW DO WE SIMPLIFY FRACTIONS? Take the fraction from the previous page.. 75/100 REMEMBER THAT WHAT YOU DO TO THE TOP YOU MUST DO TO THE BOTTOM (AND VICE VERSA) 75 (I’M THINKING THAT I KNOW MY DIVISIBILITY RULES HERE) 100(5 CAN GO INTO BOTH OF THESE!) 75 / 5 = 15 (AGAIN, I KNOW THAT 5 CAN GO INTO BOTH!) 100 / 5 = 2015/5 = 3 20 / 5 = 4
9
PARTNER ACTIVITY In your Math ISN’s… Create 2 columns.. Label one decimals and the other fractions.. Write 10 decimal numbers (base of 10 or 100 only please) Swap with a partner, have your partner write the fraction equivalent in the correct column. Then… Write 10 fractions in their ISN… swap back and have your partner write in the decimal equivalents to those fractions in the correct column.
10
INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY Complete the math boxes on page 84 independently.
11
HOMEWORK Page 112 – Ordering Decimals is the homework for this lesson Enrichment: Write and solve decimal riddles similar to the one on your workbook page 83.
