Receiving God’s Healing
4
INTRODUCTION JEHOVAH RAPHA is perhaps the most often “called upon” name when Christians are inflicted with physical illness. But the first time the name was used in the Bible, it was not used in that context, but of God’s people murmuring. The irony of this is when this complaining happened. It was after a time of praise and worship.
5
Exodus 14:31 (KJV) And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses. Exodus 15:1 (KJV) Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the LORD, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.
6
Two-thirds of chapter 15 consist of a song of worship and praise. It is a tribute to Yahweh and His deliverance. It was, in fact, the final victory of the Egyptians. It was a confession and expression of thanksgiving to their JEHOVAH JIREH, who had provided; EL ELYON who had demonstrated His superiority over the gods of Egypt; To EL SHADDIA, whose mighty hand parted the Red Sea. Amidst their doubts Yahweh was still faithful…But…
7
Exodus 15:22–23 (KJV) 22 So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water. 23 And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah.
8
Our workbook said: After crossing the Red Sea, the Israelites probably expected to travel straight to the Promised Land with no serious problems. However, their triumph is followed by tribulation. Since the water is not fit to drink, the people grumble against Moses. They had seen the miracle of God dividing the Red Sea, but could not trust Him when the came to a pond!
9
Exodus 15:24-25 (KJV) 24 And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink? 25 And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them,
10
The water of Marah was not poison; it just had a bitter taste. Some scholars think that the tree had no physical effect on the water. The water’s taste changed because of Moses’ obedience. On the other hand, many theologians believe that the tree may have served as a porous filter that improved the taste of the water. Either way, God’s was involved in changing the water from bitter to sweet.
11
Exodus 15:26 (KJV) 26 And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.
12
On the basis of this episode, the title Yahweh Rapha is derived. Then the Lord gave the people two simple principles: 1.Obedience brings blessing 2.Disobedience brings judgment The diseases may refer to the plagues, of Egypt. Our workbook say that to receive God's healing, we must know Him as Jehovah Rapha. This name reminds us God can heal us in at least two ways...

GOD Can Heal Us PHYSICALLY
14
2 Kings 20:1 (KJV) 1 In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live.
15
Hezekiah was experiencing the same thing many of us go through. Sometimes, troubles follow each other in rapid succession. The King had been dealing with the threat of the Assyrian army’s invasion. No sooner was he delivered from that, than he was attacked with a deadly disease. He received a message from the Lord that he was going to die.
16
The Workbook: The prophet Isaiah comes to Hezekiah and tells him he is going to die, so he should put his house in order. Isaiah then leaves. Hezekiah prays, asking God to remember he has walked faithfully before Him and remember the good things he has done. Hezekiah doesn't specifically ask for healing…
17
2 Kings 20:2-3 (KJV) 2 Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the LORD, saying, 3 I beseech thee, O LORD, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore..
18
Under this new trouble the king looked back over his life and humbly reminded the Lord of his faithful service. Then he committed himself to fervent prayer. His prayer was a solemn appeal to God, one in which he felt needed to be well considered. Hezekiah, perhaps, wanted to continue to restore stability within the nation after the victory over the Assyrians.
19
2 Kings 20:4-5 (KJV) 4 And it came to pass, afore Isaiah was gone out into the middle court, that the word of the LORD came to him, saying, 5 Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD.
20
The Commentary on the Old Testament: This prayer of the godly king was answered immediately. Isaiah had not gone out of the midst of the city, when the word of the Lord came to him to return to the king, and tell him that the Lord would cure him in three days …
21
2 Kings 20:6–7 (KJV) 6 And I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake. 7 And Isaiah said, Take a lump of figs. And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered.
22
Hezekiah’s prayer (what he said) and his tears (how he felt about what he said) moved God to heal him. Isaiah announced that in three days the king would be well enough to worship God in the temple. God promised to add 15 years to Hezekiah’s life. The Lord also promised to deliver Jerusalem and the king from Sennacherib’s siege and to defend Jerusalem.

GOD Can Heal Us EMOTIONALLY
24
The Workbook: A wonderful example of God's emotional healing is found in the life of the … prophet in the … Elijah... Elijah prays one of the most powerful prayers in the Bible, … bringing fire down from heaven... Then,… Jezebel,.., sends Elijah a message that … the next day he would be dead …When Elijah hears this, he runs for his life.
25
1 Kings 19:4 (KJV) 4 But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.
26
The Workbook stresses four good points: Elijah was very discouraged that resulted in depression When we get tired and depressed, we focus on our feelings rather than the facts God provided much needed nourishment Like Elijah, we exaggerate the negative and forget about God's power

THE PASTOR’S POSITION

GOD Can Heal Us SPIRITUALLY
29
Psalm 51:10–12 (KJV) 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; And renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence; And take not thy holy spirit from me. 12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; And uphold me with thy free spirit.
30
Sin causes us to be spiritually ill. Ill is defined as a condition of being unhealthy in your body or mind: a specific condition that prevents your body or mind from working normally. We are created to have fellowship, not only with God, but with each other. David’s sin affected Bathsheba and Uriah, but it was ultimately a sin against God. Sin is a disease; it kills relationships.
31
Psalm 51:3-4 (KJV) 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
32
Psalm 103:1-3 (KJV) 1 Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. 2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: 3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;
33
Mark 2:17 (KJV) 17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
