2 UNICEF’s supported Child-Friendly Primary Education Project Teachers: Training of village school teachers on multi-grade management, and teaching- learning techniques Principals & Deputy Principals: Training materials & training of Principals & Deputy Principals on effective school planning, management, monitoring and evaluation Community/Village: Training materials & training of members of PTAs & ECs to raise their awareness of CFLE concept & child rights; to build their capacity in planning, implementing child friendly school development

3 Expected Outcomes Increased enrolment rates, retention rates & decreased dropout and repetition rates Improved school infrastructure and facilities Enhanced management & application of multigrade teaching techniques in primary schools, particularly village schools Strengthened PTAs & Education Councils’ participation in school plan development & implementation Strengthened school Principals planning, management and school improvement skills Established child friendly learning environment that is safe, healthy & academically effective for all children

4 Development and Introduction of effective monitoring and evaluation system - COMPAS What is COMPAS? A Community-based Monitoring and Progress Assessment System COMPAS includes a baseline survey twice every year (1 at the beginning of the school year and 1 at the end of the school year) The data collected will then be used for assessment of project’s progress over time.

5 Development and Introduction of effective monitoring and evaluation system - COMPAS The benefits of the system include: A project-wide centralized database Effective and efficient use of the data that is being regularly & systematically collected in the course of the school year and the program An efficient and effective tool for community participation

6 Lessons Learned Awareness raising among key stakeholders at central and local level is critically important for ownership of CFPE project It is important to set up clear criteria for the selection of school sites to ensure that the most needy schools are supported The introduction of innovative intervention: strengthening local participation in planning, implementation and management, strengthening school management etc... is time consuming and labor intensive and requires the participation and commitment of a wide range of stakeholders

7 Challenges to Overcome How to accelerate decentralization of planning, management and implementation functions at sub- national level Consolidation and integration of package of intervention at the grass-root level Resource mobilization and fund raising at sub- national levels including the local communities
