The present progressive in English includes the “ing” verb form. This does not exist in French. However, the present participle is a French verb form and is used as follows: *to describe an action that is related or simultaneous to the main verb. Includes the idea of “while” or “upon”. * to explain how or why something happens. Includes the idea of “by”. *to replace a relative clause.
