4 Structure of Greek Theatre  Look at your synopsis on Page 94, how is the play structured?  Prologue, Episodes 3-5, Exodus and Choral Ode separate each episode.  What is the purpose of the Choral Ode?  Dance and Music are very important in Greek Theatre. What type of theatre is similar to this today?

5 Telling the Story  The prologue gives you the Given Circumstances and is always said by a God  The Chorus sing and dance the Choral Ode, to emphasis what has just happened  You watch the acted scene

7 Language Effect and Example  Simile - a figure of speech in which things, different in kind or quality are compared by the use of the word like or as  In the messenger speech lines 902 – 920, find an example of a simile and perform  Discuss: What effect does a simile have for the audience?

8 Language Effect and Example  Alliteration - the repetition of a sound at the beginning of two or more neighbouring words (as in wild and woolly or a babbling brook)  In the messenger speech lines 935 – 945, find an example of alliteration and perform back  Discuss: What effect does alliteration have for the audience?

9 Language Effect and Example  Onomatopoeia - the naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (as buzz, hiss)imitation  In the choral ode lines 985 – 995, find an example of onomatopoeia and perform  Discuss: What effect does onomatopoeia have for the audience?

10 Duologue Task  Write and Perform a short scene based on any of the following themes:  Two people are discussing a new kid who has moved into town, one of you think he/she is terrific, the other one thinks he is an idiot  Two students have just stolen a final exam, one is feeling guilty and the other wants to make copies and sell them to other students  Your duologue must have a combination of similes, alliteration and onomatopoeia

12 Language Forms – Vocal Awareness  Stichomythia – Short single line cross fire  With your partner take any lines from 368 – 424.  Now thinking about pitch, pace, pause, tone, volume, diction(VOCAL AWARENESS)  Annotate and rehearse about 10 lines, underlining where you will take a pause, raise the tone of your voice etc

13 Group Task  In groups of 5, take any choral ode from the bacchae, rehearse and perform it, taking into consideration the keywords on the previous page.
