3 The history of the automobile.  Karl Benz patented the first automobile in 1886.

4 The history of the automobile.  Karl Benz was a German engineer who built the first automobile powered by an internal-combustion engine. The car had three wheels and a water-cooled engine.  In 1926 Benz merged with the Daimler company and became Daimler-Benz. This company is the manufacturer of the Mercedes-Benz automobile.

5 The history of the automobile.  The first automobile that was produced in the United States was the 1896 Duryea.

6 The history of the automobile.  The Duryea was designed and built by two brothers, Charles and Frank Duryea.  Labeled as the first successful gas powered car.  The engine produced 4 hp.  This car had four wheels instead of three.
