DAY 68 Chemical Bonding 2

Engage: Review Ions Directions: Copy the following table and complete the information using a periodic table. ElementOxidation NumberIon 1.Fr1Fr 1+ 2.Si 3.Br 4.S 5.N 6.Ca

Engage: Compounds Directions: 1) Make a T-chart. 2) On the left, write Ionic Compound. 3) On the right, write Covalent Compound. 4) Classify the chemical formulas as Ionic or Covalent Compound. CaF 2 RbClH 2 O CO 2 SnO 2 Al 2 O 3 MgCl 2 CCl 4 SiS 2 PF 3

Engage: Making Ionic Compounds Directions: In your notebook, make an ionic compound using the information provided. a.) Mg 2+ O 2- b.) F 1- Be 2+ c.) Cl 1- Na 1+ d.) Rb 1+ N 3- e.) P 3- K 1+

Chemical Formulas Chemical formulas are shorthand methods for writing compounds (molecules). Binary compounds are made of 2 ions (1 positive + 1 negative) The positive ion formula is always written first The negative ion formula is written last Subscripts are used to show the ratio of (+) : (-) ions Read the “Simple Binary Ionic Compounds” notes and complete 1-10 on Worksheet 2.

Notes: Ionic Compound metalnonmetal positive #negative # Group # = V.E.(Group #) – 8 Example: Ca 2+ S 2- (6 - 8 = -2) loses 2egains 2e

Elaborate: Compound Activity Teacher will provide you with materials. Follow the instructions and complete the activity. You will need to use a periodic table.

1.Fold the construction paper in half hamburger style. 2.With the short side at the bottom, lay out half of the metal pieces so that you can write the charge above the block. 3.Glue the metals in place. 4.Write the charge above the metal name.

1.Using half of the nonmetal pieces, lay them out so that there is one nonmetal beside every metal. Be sure to leaving room at the end of the row to write the formula. 2.Glue the nonmetals in place. 3.Write the charge above the nonmetal name. 4.Write an = sign and the formula for the compound after the nonmetal. = = = = = = =

Elaborate: Ionic Compound Formation Use the information of the handout to form ionic compounds. DO NOT WRITE ON THE HANDOUT. Write all answers on the paper you were provided. Make sure your name is on your paper. Turn in as soon as completed. You have 15 minutes to complete this activity

Each Student will receive a element card. You will find another student that you may chemically bond with. You will make the bond and write it on the sheet provided! Bond with a Classmate

Evaluate: Exit Slip Write the symbol and for a sulfur ion with a plus two charge.
