200 Chart Vocabulary Strategies Columns / Rows Intervals Evens / Odd Skip Counting Counting Up / Counting Back Sum / Difference

200 Chart Games Spin & Add * Provides a purpose for moving around the 200 Chart. 1. Both players start on 50. 2. Player spins and makes the move on the 200 Chart. 3. Record the spin and new #. 4. At the end of 10 spins, the player with the largest # wins. Moving on the 200 Chart *Allows students to visualize skip counting patterns on the 200 chart. 1. Player spins 3 times & finds the sum of the 3 numbers. 2. Player records the sum. 3. Player 2 repeats. 4. The player with the highest # each round wins!

Computation Games & Vocabulary Games 1.Bumble Bee 2.Sink or Swim 2.Spill the Beans Vocabulary Add / Sum Subtract / Difference Difference Strategies Counting up Counting back

Bumble Bee 1.Players put their markers on the bee. 2.Player 1 moves to the first flower and rolls the dice. The player will add, subtract, or multiply the numbers on the dice. 3. The goal is to match the answer to one of the numbers on the flower petals. 4.If you make a match, you can move to the next flower. If you can’t make a match, stay on that flower. 5.The player who reaches the hive first wins the game.

Sink or Swim 1. Players put markers on the Start circle. 2.Player 1 rolls the dice and adds or subtracts the two numbers. 3.If the answer is an odd number, the player moves one space toward the shark. 4.If the number is an even number, the player moves toward the raft. 5. Players take turns doing this until one player reaches the raft (5 points) or the shark (3 points).

Spill the Beans 1. Put 2 beans in a cup 2. Player 1 spills the beans onto the game board. 3.The player either adds or multiplies the numbers that the beans landed on. 4. Using scratch paper (if necessary), the player subtracts the sum of the 2 numbers from 50. 5. Players take turns spilling the beans and subtracting until one player reaches zero!

Place Value Games Place Value Toss 1.Player 1 rolls the die and says “Places, Please.” 2.Each player writes that number in any space on their game board (ones, tens, hundreds place). Or, players can choose to put a number in the garbage. 3.Player 2 rolls and says “Places, Please.” 4.Players repeat Step 2 and 3 until boxes are filled. 5.The player with the highest number wins 5 points.

Take Your Places Please Take out the kings, queens, jacks, and jokers. The Ace can be used as a 1. *Players need to decide whether they are making the largest or smallest number possible. Player 1 draws a card places that card on the Digit Mat in the ones, tens, or hundreds column. Player 2 repeats this step with their stack of cards. 3. Players repeat these steps until both players have the boxes filled in. The person with the biggest / smallest number wins the round.

Spinning Numbers 1.This game can be played with 1 or 2 players. 2.The goal is to create the largest number possible with the given number of spins. 3.The player will spin the spinner and record that number in one of the spaces provided.

Place Value Vocabulary Place Value Ones, Tens, Hundreds Base-Ten Pieces Bits, Skinnies, Flats

Base 10 Smiles 1.These boards can be used to practice place value at home. Each game board sheet will represent a different column in the place value chart. 2.Leave 1 board whole. Do not cut this board. This board will represent the hundreds. We call this a FLAT in 2 nd grade. 3.Cut 1 board into 10 strips of 10. These strips will represent tens. We call these SKINNIES in 2 nd grade. 4.Cut 1 board into individual squares. These squares represent ones. We call these BITS in 2 nd grade.

Money Games Volcanic Cash 1.Player 1 rolls the die and uses the key to determine the cash value of the roll. The player places counters over the coins equal to that value. Player 2 continues to do the same. 2.At any point in the game, a player may forfeit their turn and trade in coins to move to the next row. Example: if a player has 5 pennies, they can move up to a nickel. 3.The first player to reach $1.00 wins!

Guess My Coins 1.One player puts coins in a cup and counts the total value. Player 1 tells Player 2 what the VALUE of the coins is. 2.Player 2 tries to guess which coins Player 1 used to come up with that value. 3.If the guess is correct, Player 2 wins a point. If the guess is incorrect, Player 2 guesses again.

Race to 50 1. Player 1 rolls two dice. The number rolled indicates the amount of pennies awarded for that turn. 2. The player covers that amount of pennies on their board. If 5 pennies are accumulated, one of the nickels is covered up. If both nickels are accumulated, one of the dimes is covered up. 3. Players continue to alternate turns until one player reaches the 2 nd quarter ($.50).

Thanks for coming to Family Math Night We hope you have fun using your new math strategies and games at home! Don’t forget to count tonight on your MRL for this week! A special thanks to PTO and the Take Stock in Cedar Hills program for supporting us tonight!
