Pueblo lived in 16 towns along the Rio Grande River of New Mexico and practiced farming. They planted such crops as corn, beans and squash), Rio Grande

The Pueblos used the natural resources in this area to get what they needed to live. You will learn how they used the resources for homes, food, clothes, and tools and weapons. Click on the buttons to learn more about how they used these resources. 21

The land they lived consisted of high flatlands. The region had hot days, cold nights and little rainfall. Click on the buttons to learn more about how they used these resources. 12 The desert provided adobe for homes. It also provided wildlife for food and materials for making clothing and tools.

The Pueblos lived in homes called a Pueblo. Say the word, Pueblo. Point to each part of the word as you say it. Where did the Pueblos live? Pueblo

Their homes were built with mud, sticks and stones. They looked like big apartment buildings. The Pueblo is made entirely of adobe - - earth mixed with water and straw, then either poured into forms or made into sun-dried bricks 213 Materials For Building The bricks were dried in the sun

The Pueblo. 213 A Pueblo has a flat roof and is built next to or on top of it's neighbor. Families slept on rugs or animal skins. The word "pueblo" is not a native word. It means town in spanish. "Pueblo" is used for both the houses and the people who live in them.

Building A Pueblo Pueblos are built several ways. One way is to use rocks to build a wall and cover the rocks with a plaster of mud on the outside. Adobe is a type of brick made from straw and mud, that was used to cover the rocks Used with permission of Tara Pringle/Nativetech.org 123

The Pueblos would use a ladder to get inside their home. In time of danger they would pull up their ladder so no enemy could get inside. Inside a Pueblo home. They would use animals skins and handmade rugs to sleep on. Each room of the pueblo usually went to one Pueblo family.

Pueblo’s Food The Pueblos lived in the Southwest a desert area. Remembering that it hardly ever rains and is very dry, which plants do you think grew in the desert? Read the next few slides to see if you are right. mushrooms strawberriescorn beans cactus

The Three Sisters The most important foods for the southwest people were corn, beans, pumpkins, and squash. Pueblo Indians were farmers. Most of their food came from crops. Squash Corn Beans 213

Farming The men cleared the fields and prepared the soil. The women did most of the farming. They used sharp sticks to poke holes in the dirt and put seeds in each hole. The children would walk the fields every day and pick insects off the plants by hand and would pull up weeds. 213 Click on the sun to see more on farming.

Corn was the most important crop for the Pueblo people. They ground it into corn meal and baked it in ovens like this one in a pueblo. Cooking A horno is a kind of oven used by Pueblo Indians to cook bread and tortillas in. They used the roof of their pueblo like a porch.

They also grew gourds that could be dried out and used as containers. The Pueblos also grew cotton that they used to make cloth.

The wildlife was very important to the Pueblos. Men hunted any animal they could find living in the desert. The women and children would collect wild foods like berries when they were in season. 213 Wildlife

Pueblo Indians didn't use horses or canoes for transportation. To get from place to place, the Pueblo Indians traveled on foot. So their transportation was walking.. How did the Pueblos get around? Rivers, Creek, Streams Flat Land

Walking They traded with other groups for things they could not grow or make. They would travel long distances to trade with other Native Americans for things they could not grow or make. Both men and women wore moccasins to protect their feet from the desert conditions.
