Irregulars in the comparatives

There are comparative irregulars in English as well as in Spanish More good = better More bad = worse Más bueno = mejor Más malo = peor

The following adjectives have irregular forms for the comparative and the superlative: Adjective: bueno (good) Comparative: mejor (better) Superlative: el/la mejor (best) Adjective: malo (bad) Comparative: peor (worse) Superlative: el/la peor (the worst)

The other 2 irregulars Adjective: grande (big) Comparative: mayor (older; greater) Superlative: el/la mayor (oldest; greatest) Adjective: pequeño (small) Comparative: menor (younger; less) Superlative: el/la menor(youngest; least) HOWEVER …

This does not refer to size, rather it refers to importance and age El agua es de mayor importancia que la comida. (greater importance) Soy mayor que mi perro (older) But… – La casa es más grande que el garaje (larger)

Note that the words más and menos are not used with the irregular comparatives. Este libro es bueno, pero ese libro es mejor. Esta película es mala, pero esa película es peor.

With the irregular superlatives, the definite article is used. Este libro es bueno. – This book is good. Ese libro es mejor. – That book is better. Aquel libro es el mejor. – That book over there is the best.

Relative adjectives Grande(big)= adjective Más grande(bigger)= comparative El/la más grande(biggest)= superlative Feo (ugly)= adjective Más feo(uglier)= comparative El/la más feo(ugliest)= superlative

Non-relative adjectives Grande(big)= adjective Sumamente grande(huge)= adjective Grandísimo(massive)= adjective Feo (ugly)= adjective Sumamente feo(way ugly) = adjective Feísimo(yikes!)= adjective
