6-3.1Compare the characteristic structures of invertebrate animals (including sponges, segmented worms, echinoderms, mollusks, and arthropods) and vertebrate animals (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals).

Bell Ringer 02/24/15 Which group of invertebrates does this animal belong to ? Organisms are classified into the Kingdom based on two things: – 1) the number of cells they contain….AND – 2) how they _______________________

Vertebrate Animals
7
EQ What are the characteristics of vertebrate animals?
8
Vertebrates have the following characteristics: 1.They have an endoskeletons or an internal skeleton with a backbone and muscles. 2.They have blood that circulates through vessels. 3.They have lungs or gills for breathing. 4.They have skin for protection. 5.Most have legs, wings, or fins for movement. 6.They have a nervous system with a brain.
9
Vertebrates are classified by body temperature. Vertebrates are either: a.Ectothermic b.Endothermic 1.Fish, amphibians and reptiles are ectothermic. Their body temperature changes with the environment. 2.Birds and Mammals are endothermic. Their body temperature remain constant regardless of the environment.
10
Fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals make up the vertebrate phyla.
11
Fish Characteristics 1.Three groups of Fish: –Bony –Cartilaginous –Jaw-less 2. Fish have scales and most lay eggs 3.Fish have fins and live in water 4.Fish are Ectothermic 5.Fish breathe by obtaining dissolved oxygen in the water through gills.
12
Amphibians 1.Three groups of Amphibians –frogs –Toads –salamanders 2.They undergo metamorphosis. 3.They Lay jelly-like eggs in water. 4.They are Ectothermic 5.They Breathe with gills as tadpoles or nymphs. 6.They Breathe with lungs as adults when they move on land. 7.Adults can also breathe through their skin.
13
Reptiles 1.Reptiles have scales or plates as an outer covering 2.Reptiles lay eggs. Some eggs hatch inside female. 3.They are Ectothermic 4.Breath with lungs 5.Most reptiles live on land.
14
Birds 1.Birds have feathers a beak, two wings, and two feet. 2.All birds lay eggs, 3.Most all birds fly. 4.Live in all environments. 5.Birds are Endothermic. 6.Birds breathe with lungs.
15
Mammals 1.Most mammals have babies that are born live. The platypus hatches from eggs. 2.Mammals have fur or hair and produce milk to feed their young. 3.Mammals live in all environments 4.They are Endothermic 5.Mammals breathe with lungs.
