IT’S A HEAT THING. CONVECTION, RADIATION, AND CONDUCTION

KINETIC ENERGY Energy of motion. The faster molecules vibrate or move, the more energy they have. The amount of kinetic energy in the molecules of a material determines how much heat it has also called thermal energy. Hot materials = FAST Cold materials = SLOW

HEAT TRANSFER Heat can move, or transfer, from one place to another. Heat always flows from a hotter location (more energy) to a cooler location (less energy).

THREE WAYS OF TRANSFERING HEAT 1- Radiation 2- Conduction 3- Convection

RADIATION Is the transfer of energy as electromagnetic waves. The kind of energy that travels through the air or empty space. (ex: You place your hand over a lightbulb, you can feel the heat even though you are not touching the bulb, The sun heats the heat through the process of radiation) Travels in the form of rays. Materials do not have to touch for energy to transfer from one to the other.

CONDUCTION The transfer of heat from a warmer substance to a cooler substance through direct contact. (ex: burning your tongue on hot pizza, a metal spoon placed in a cup of hot tea, the spoon will become hot)

CONVECTION Transfer of heat in a fluid (liquid) through currents. **Go to google classroom and watch the convection demos video, once finished finish this powerPoint and note taking.

TEMPERATURE Measure of the average kinetic energy of the molecules in a material.

COPY THE QUESTION AND ANSWER THE FOLLOWING IN YOUR NOTES. 1- What is heat? 2- What heats Earth’s atmosphere? 3- What are the three ways energy can transfer from one material to another? 4- Discuss with a partner and explain three ways that Earth’s atmosphere gets heated. 5- What is temperature? 6- Explain to your partner why the alcohol level in a thermometer goes down when the weather gets cold.

ANSWER THE STUDENT QUESTIONS Go back to google classroom at the end of the conduction, radiation, and convection pdf and find the student questions. On a separate piece of paper (to be handed in) answer questions 1- 7 – you do not have to write the question, HOWEVER, please RESTATE the question in your answer. Please use complete sentences.
