What is heat? Have you ever taken a sip of hot cocoa and burned your tongue? Ouch! Energy in the hot drink flows into your tissues and damages them. The energy that causes such a burn is heat. Heat is thermal energy that flows between objects due to a difference in temperatures. Heat is measured in joules (j). Your tongue is colder than the drink, so heat flows from the drink into your tongue. Heat moves from an object with high temperature to an object with low temperature. But what is temperature? Temperature is a measurement of the average kinetic energy of particles in an object. All the particles in an object are vibrating with kinetic energy. Objects with a higher temperature have particles that are vibrating faster. Objects with a lower temperature have particles that do not vibrate as much. Lesson 1 Heat
