Types of HEAT Energy Transfers CONDUCTION Objects are in direct contact. Heat energy transfers when particles collide or objects in contact are TOUCHING. Material that transfers heat easily are conductors. Insulators don’t conduct heat. Heat energy transfers from higher temperature areas to lower temperature areas. EQ: How can heat be transferred? ConDUCKtion

Types of HEAT Energy Transfers CONDUCTION Ex: Metal spoon in soup gets hotter faster than a plastic spoon in the same soup. insulator conductor
3
Types of HEAT Energy Transfers CONVECTION Energy transfer by movement of a heated substance in liquids or gases. Warmer particles (higher energy) move to cooler parts of a liquid or gas. Ex. Uneven heating of air (causing wind) and ocean currents that influence weather.

Types of HEAT Energy Transfers RADIATION Transfer of energy across SPACE without particles of matter colliding or moving to transfer the energy. Radiated energy warms an object when it is absorbed. Radiant heat energy moves from an area of higher temp. to an area of cooler temp. Ex. – Sun’s heat traveling to Earth.

Notes: Examples of Convection, Conduction and Radiation Conduction Convection Radiation HOT COLD HOT SOUP = HOT SPOON Roasting Marshmallows Hot gases rise or hot liquids rise. Cold gases sink or cold liquids sink. (TOUCH!) (SPACE!) heat
