Atmospheric MOTION SC.6.E.7.5 Explain how energy provided by the Sun influences global patterns of atmospheric movement and the temperature differences between air, water, and land. Essential Question: How does energy move predictably between land, water and the air above it?

Warm Up On a summer day, Thomas is standing in his driveway waiting for his mother. Energy from the Sun is making Thomas feel hot. This energy is being transmitted by three different methods. Which of the following is an example of convection? A. Energy streaming through space toward Thomas B. Heat being transferred from air particles to the asphalt C. Heat moving through Thomas’s clothes to warm his skin D. Warm air rising from just above the asphalt to reach the level of Thomas’s face

When absorbed, the light transforms to heat energy.
radiation Radiation: Electromagnetic Waves from the Sun travel through our atmosphere and hit the surface (land, water) When absorbed, the light transforms to heat energy.
6
CONDUCTION: The transfer of heat energy by two or
more objects in contact with each other. The hot land warms the air it touches above it The warm water warms the air it touches above it.
7
convection Convection: The transfer of energy through the movement of hot or cool fluids (air and water). Hot air rises because it has low pressure. Cool air sinks because it has high pressure. Differences in temperature (and air pressure) cause wind (moving air trying to reach the same temperature.)
8
Local Winds - Sea Breeze
During the day, the land is HOTTER than the ocean. A breeze moves from the cool air over water (HIGH pressure) to the warm air over land (LOW pressure).
9
Local Winds - Land Breeze
At night, the ocean is WARMER than the land. A breeze moves from the cool air over land (HIGH pressure) to the warm air over the ocean (LOW pressure).

How quickly a substance absorbs and gives off heat.
Specific Heat How quickly a substance absorbs and gives off heat. Land heats up/gives off heat very quickly. Water heats up/gives off heat very slowly.

Mini-Quiz #1 In December, Bill was driving through Florida with his family. As they drove closer to the coast, Bill noticed that the air grew a little cooler. Which of the following statements best explains the temperature difference? Air expands at higher temperatures. Warm air moves toward the coastline from inland areas. The land heats up faster than water, creating a sea breeze. The water heats up faster than the land, creating a land breeze. Correct Answer: C

Mini-Quiz #2 The Sun’s energy travels through space to reach Earth. This energy supplies light and heat form the planet. Heat travels in several ways through Earth’s air, water, and land. Which of the following methods of heat transfer is an example of convection? A. Rays of sunlight reach Earth’s surface B. Warm air rises and displaces cooler air C. Heat moves from warmed asphalt into the air D. Heat moves form the top layer of soil to the lower layers Correct Answer: B

Mini-Quiz #3 The arrows in the picture below show several ways heat is transferred from the Sun as it strikes sand on the surface of a beach. Which arrow shows convection? 1 2 3 4 Correct Answer: D

Mini-Quiz #4 Over the course of a year, areas near Earth’s equator receive more direct sunlight from the Sun than areas near Earth’s poles. Which of the following correctly describes one result of this heating pattern? A. The poles lose all their heat at night. B. Atmospheric and oceanic currents distribute heat from the tropics to the poles. C. Sunlight overheats the oceans near the equator, making it impossible for sea life to exist there. D. Sunlight evaporates a massive amount of surface water near the tropics, creating flooding in this part of the world.
18
Mini-Quiz #5 How does the energy provided by the Sun affect global ocean currents? A. The Sun heats the land, which causes currents to flow close to coasts. B. The Sun heats the world’s oceans evenly, which causes currents to flow around Earth. C. The Sun heats waters near the equator, which then move toward the poles where the waters cool. D. The Sun heats waters near the poles, which causes the waters to move toward the equator to cool.

Mini-Quiz #6 A. Air expands at higher temperatures.
In December, Bill was driving through Florida with his family. As they drove closer to the coast, Bill noticed that the air grew a little warmer. Which of the following statements best explains the temperature difference? A. Air expands at higher temperatures. B. Water heats and cools more slowly than the land does. C. Warm air moves toward the coastline from inland areas. D. Cool air moves from coastal areas to inland areas in a sea breeze.
