The bigger picture A world of speed

Objectives… Objectives To be able to identify what makes objects go faster from the world of engineering To work together in a group Outcomes To enhance your own design

Answer the following questions all based on movement: 1.A tidal wave or ‘tsunami’ is caused by what? 2.What is the fastest land animal? 3.What in our bodies do we use to make us move? 4.What object cannot move on its own? 5.Wind is the movement of what? 6.A shark can swim fast because of its? 7.What is the fastest land vehicle in the world? Starter A world of speed

Have you ever… A world of speed …thought about how aeroplanes or spaceships are made? Aeroplanes are part of everyday life and engineers are always thinking of exciting new ways to travel…one day we may be flying into space for our holidays! Engineers use maths, science and computers to design and build these amazing machines. Task 1: Look at the following slides and in your groups decide on one of the vehicles to research. Have a look at what materials have been used and why Look at the overall design and reasons for doing this Is there anything else you can find out about the design?

Fastest boat 1

Bullet train from Japan 2

Formula 1 – red bull racing car 3

Worlds fastest plane 4

Fastest land bike 5

How can this help? A world of speed Task 2: You have been thinking about how to design and build an object to project a tennis ball as far as possible. Use your research to enhance your own designs and add any ideas to your current plans. Remember: Materials used? Is it designed for speed?

Answers to starter A world of speed 1.An earthquake under the sea 2.Cheetah 3.Muscles 4.Rock 5.Air 6.long pointed body 7.Thrust SSC
