Introduction Students often say, “I don’t know exactly what I want to do when I get out of school, but I want to do something with computers.” This can mean a lot of things, there is a wide range of computer related positions, with an equally wide range of education, experience, and training required to work in these positions. There are many things to consider when looking for a job “working with computers” including and certainly not limited to: How much schooling can I afford and do I want to go through? How much do I want to make? Where do I want to end up working? What type of work environment do I wish to spend my days in?

Goal of This Presentation This overview of some of the jobs available in an IT department will provide the reader with job descriptions, education/experience required, starting salary, and and a look at the working environment for each position. These are typical Information Technology jobs, but each company will have unique needs, job descriptions, educational/experience requirements, hours, and working conditions. Salary information obtained from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics and reflect salaries for entry level positions in Orange County, California. Good luck with your career plans!

Information Systems Manager JOB SUMMARY: Under direction of the financial services director, plans, organizes and conducts company wide management reviews of operating and financial systems and procedures; oversees the development and operation of integrated management information systems and services; organizes and manages telephone and network communication systems; and performs related work as required. Work involves regular contact with other departments, divisions, various boards, and the general public. Supervision is exercised over professional, technical and clerical personnel.

Systems Administrator JOB SUMMARY: Under direction, installs, configures, troubleshoots, administers, and maintains local area networks (LANs), network servers, operating systems and services, network communication systems, including wide area networks (WANs), network switches, routers, concentrators, VPNs, firewalls, backup systems; Repair, install, and troubleshoot personal computers (PC’s), software, and related equipment; support PC users in use of various hardware and software; act as liaison between the company and outside services regarding PC’s, servers, operating systems, and network communication devices; and performs related work as required. Work involves regular contact with all departments and divisions. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a background in science or business related discipline or equivalent experience, extensive experience in network administration, server installation and configuration, network and systems security, network performance tuning, operating systems, system backups, and network connected devices, and certification as a Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE) or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school including or supplemented by courses in data entry operations. Some records management experience, with strong ability to organize and manage documents, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
