Today we shall be covering : Interactive Whiteboards Moodle Blogs Wikis Forums (Description/Demo/Tasks/Evaluation) Introduction Tools and Techniques: Technology In Teaching And Learning
2
Technology InTeaching And Learning- ( From PGCE Module Handbook:”Tools + Techniques”) Aims Of Session: Increase awareness of the role of Technology in Teaching and Learning Increase user skills in this area Learning Objectives: Identify and evaluate new resources-Interactive Whiteboard, Blogs etc Employ key AV resources in a workshop setting Evaluate own performance in using key AV resources
3
Technology InTeaching And Learning- What Is It? E-Learning: “ The computer and network-enabled transfer of skills and knowledge” Comprises Of: Web-based Learning Computer (PC) Based Learning Virtual Classroom Opportunities Digital Collaboration
4
Technology InTeaching And Learning- Why Do We Use It? To enhance the Teaching and Learning experience To place Teaching and Learning within the ever widening and global “Cyber-Context”
5
Technology InTeaching And Learning- “The inclusion of learning technology within education across all levels is becoming a reality. It is something that institutions, departments and individual members of staff cannot ignore. Learning Technologies have opened up a world of multi-media resources that can be quickly searched and flexibly accessed across computer networks, not only locally, but worldwide” ( Wendy Hall-Professor of Computer Science Southampton Uni 2009)
6
Technology InTeaching And Learning- Interactive Whiteboard-What Is It? A large interactive display that connects to a PC and a projector. The computers desktop is projected onto the board's surface where users control the computer using a pen, finger or other device.
7
Technology InTeaching And Learning- 4 Reasons To Use The SMART Board Can increase learner engagement Enhance learning Can make explaining less difficult Stimulates different learning styles DEMO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mqm rIqWQiAw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mqm rIqWQiAw
8
Technology InTeaching And Learning- The SMART Board Group Exercise: In groups of 4 or 5-Mindstorm some ways that the SMART Board could be used in the classroom. Use the flip-chart paper and pens
9
Technology InTeaching And Learning- The SMART Board Little research at present on SMART Board usage and academic achievement-However: Glover and Miller: (2003) “Teachers’ use of the technology was not primarily affected by training, access, or software availability. When used as a transformative device (approximately 10% of teachers taking part in the study) the impact on pedagogy was transformative”
10
Technology InTeaching And Learning- Blogs-What Are They? A type of Website or a part of a website Normally managed by an individual working autonomously or as part of an organisation Regular entries – descriptions of events/links to websites/graphics Allow for interactivity-comment etc Could be subject specific (Art/Sport/Media/Culture etc) WYSIWYG Technology
11
Technology InTeaching And Learning- Blogs-An Academic Context Blogs-An example of “Asynchronous learning “: Def: Learner-centred teaching method that uses online learning resources to facilitate information sharing outside the constraints of time and place among a network of people. Based on Constructivist Theory, a student-centred approach that emphasizes the importance of peer-to-peer interactions. (Synchronous Learning: A group of people learning at the same time in the same place-In this context Video Conferencing etc )
12
Technology InTeaching And Learning- Blogs-An Academic Context Individual Exercise: Add To A Blog In Moodle: Log into Moodle My Courses>Your Course Block 7>Technology in Teaching & Learning>John Kertland PGCE Test Blog>Add Your Comment> New Blog Comment>Add Title> Post Subscribe To Atom feed>Receive Blog Updates Print screen your contribution(s) + paste into a word document as evidence
13
Technology InTeaching And Learning- Blogs-An Academic Context Advantages: Learner Centred-accessible self-created content Augment other materials/projects designed to aid reflective learning-(ie Lesson Notes) A good example of Petty’s theory of constructivist or “Brain Friendly” teaching in action-A challenge that enhances T+L.
14
Technology InTeaching And Learning- Blogs-An Academic Context Disadvantages: “Fit For Purpose?” Content not mediated and can contain mistakes. Safety/Privacy/Access: There are issues around this. Possibility of “Flaming” attacks against bloggers. Online attackers can be anonymous creating this opportunity. It may be politic to keep your online identity anonymous when blogging. Q: Why?
15
Technology InTeaching And Learning- Wikis-What Are They? A website that allows the easy creation and editing of any number of interlinked web pages through easily available free software. Similar to a Blog in that content is user-generated. Uses: To create collaborative Wiki websites (i.e. :Wikipedia), to power community websites, for personal note-taking.
16
Mobile Apps In Teaching and Learning iPhone/Android New Mobile Technology: Smartphones Apps affordable/Cheap Android/iPhone IE: UnFREEz (View PowerPoint presentations on your smartphone)
17
Technology InTeaching And Learning- Wikis-An Academic Context Wiki=Hawaiian for “Quick” Def: Collaborative software programmes that can be used easily (WYSIWYG) and freely
18
Technology InTeaching And Learning- Wikis-An Academic Context Advantages: Can be used or teachers planning a course or a curriculum. Collaboration between teachers and learners. For collaborative work between learners. Software can revert back to past versions of an article.
19
Technology InTeaching And Learning- Wikis-An Academic Context Disadvantages: Like Blogs content is not mediated Open to Spam and vandalism if not managed properly Quality issue: “Open” and “Closed” authoring You Tube Tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JXhOrr wbbI&feature=related
20
Technology InTeaching And Learning- Wikis-An Academic Context Individual Exercise: Consider how you might incorporate a WIKI Into your Peer Teaching session-produce a draft proposal. You can “firm” this up later (10 Mins)
