Poetry = form of writing usually divided into lines and stanzas, using regular rhythmical patterns (meters); highly concise, musical and emotionally charged language; may include imagery, figurative language, and special devices.

Narrative Poem = tells a story. Ballad = a song that tells a story. Epic = long poem about a hero and his/her adventures. Example of an Epic = The Odyssey.

Lyric Poem = expresses emotions or thoughts; capture a moment or a mood, does NOT tell a story. Sonnet = a 14 line poem with a set rhyme scheme and meter.

Free Verse = a poem with no set rhythm or rhyme scheme. Blank Verse = poetry written in unrhymed iambic pentameter. Ode = in praise of…

Stanza = a group of lines that form a single unit in a poem; the “paragraph” of a poem. Couplet = 2 rhyming lines, usually at the end of a stanza or poem. Quatrain = a 4 line stanza.

Rhythm = pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in language. Meter = formal organization of rhythm. Rhyme = refers to the repeated ending sounds in words. Give three examples of rhymes: hat/cat tip/rip

End Rhyme = rhyming words that appear at the end of the lines. Internal Rhyme = when rhyming words fall within a line. Rhyme Scheme (plan or pattern) = words that have the same sound. It can happen at the end or in the middle of lines.

Write the rhyme scheme of the limerick: There was a young boy from Caboo, _____ Who had trouble tying his shoe. ______ He said to his ox, ______ “I’ll just walk in my socks!” ______ Now all of his friends to that, too! ______ The set rhyme scheme of a limerick is _________.

Repetition = the use, more than once, of any element of language. Things that can be repeated are : a sound a word a clause a phrase a sentence a grammatical pattern

Alliteration = repetition of the first sound of several words in a line. Underline the alliteration below: Betty bought some butter for the bread. She said to Sally, “This stuff was on sale!” Caleb came and carried the bread to the boardroom.

Assonance = repetition of vowel sounds. What are the vowels? _____, _____, _____, _____, _____, and sometimes _____. Underline the assonance below: See me climb the tree. Her feet flew by the fleet of sleeping geeks.

Onomatopoeia = words that imitate actual sounds.
