Journal #10 (16 points) Assigned: 10/12/15 Due: 10/16/15 The task of removing parentheses from an expression being subtracted is a tricky one, and not easy to explain. When the expression in parentheses itself involves subtraction, it’s even harder. 1.) Describe and explain the steps involved in simplifying these expressions. a.) 20 – 5(x + 3) b.) 20 + 5(x – 3) 2.) The next expression can be simplified all the way to 4x + 7. Show and EXPLAIN the process of simplifying it to that point. 6(3x + 4) – 4(x – 2) – 5(2x + 5)

Journal #12 (12pts) Assigned: 10/26/15 Due: 10/30/15 An architect is designing a new lakefront cottage. He must consider the building codes in the design. The rectangular lot on which the cottage will be built is 220 ft long and has 11ft of frontage on the lake. a. The building code states that a building must be no closer than 25ft to the lot line. Write and solve an inequality to determine how long the cottage front facing the lake may be. b. The buyers expect that the cost of the cottage will be about $125,000. They are able to deviate from this cost by no more than $12,500. Write and solve an absolute value inequality to find the range of costs. Explain your answer.

Journal 13 (12pts) Assigned: 11/2/15 Due: 11/6/15 Maryann decided to sell woodworking crafts that she makes. First she invests $585 in tools. Each item costs $35 in wood and other supplies. I. a) Write an equation that relates total costs y to the number of crafts created x. b) Create a table to show this relationship. Use the following number of crafts in the table. 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 c) Graph the relationship. Maryann sells her crafts for $75 each. II. a) Write an equation that relates total income y to the number of crafts sold x. b) Create a table to show this relationship. Use the same number of crafts as above. c) Graph the relationship on the same coordinate plane as part I. III. How many crafts would Maryann have to sell to make a profit? How do you know this? Explain thoroughly using complete sentences.

Journal #11 (16 points) Assigned: 10/19/15 Due: 10/23/15 A manufacturer is cutting fabric into rectangles that are 18.55 in long by 36.75 in. wide. Each rectangle’s length and width must be within 0.05 in. of the desired size. 1.) Write and solve inequalities to fine the acceptable range for the length ( l ) and the width ( w ). 2.) Graph both the inequalities. 3) Write the solutions in (a) set builder notation (b) interval notation

Journal #14 (10pts) Assigned: 11/9/15 Due: 11/13/15 Mrs. Denney is renting a car that gets 35 miles per gallon. The rental charge is $19.50 a day plus 18¢ per mile. Her company will reimburse her for $33 of this portion of her travel expenses. If Mrs. Denney rents the car for 1 day, find the maximum number of miles that will be paid for by her company.

Journal #15 (12 Pts) Assigned: 11/16/15 Due: 11/20/15 With some functions, the value of the dependent variable decreases as the value of the independent variable increases. (1) What is a real-world example of this? (2)Explain why you think the dependent variable decreases as the independent variable increases. (sentence – paragraph form) (3) Sketch a graph modeling the function.

Journal #16 (5pts) Assigned: 11/30/15 Due: 12/4/15 Math is everywhere! Describe five (5) different events over the Thanksgiving break where you used or noticed math being used or applied. Answer in sentence/paragraph form. Make sure to explain/describe the who, what, where, when and why.

Journal #17 (12pts) Assigned: 12/7/15 Due: 12/11/15 A football team scores 63 points. All of the points come from field goals worth 3 points and touchdowns worth 7 points. Write and graph a linear equation that represents this situation. List every possible combination of field goals and touchdowns. Answer each of the following questions to help you work through the problem. 1. What are you given? 2. How can touchdowns and field goals be represented? 3. What is the equation in standard form that models the situation? 4. How can you find the y-intercept? 5. How can you find the x-intercept? 6. How can you use the intercepts to graph the line? **Graph your equation and use the graph to determine a list ALL of the combinations.

Journal #18 (5pts) Assigned: 12/14/15 Due: 12/18/15 Reflecting back on this semester in Algebra I, what are:  5 concepts or activities that you enjoyed or liked,  4 new concepts or facts that you learned,  3 concepts we need to go back over, either for you or others,  2 suggestion or activities you would like to do next semester (within reason)  1 question you have been wanting to ask. Answers must be in complete sentences. Please take this assignment seriously, you will be counted off for silly or inappropriate answers.
