stafoverleg 28 February 2013

“Follow-You” printing I am indeed a (very) happy Follow-You user But, I did not invent it! CT did. DT only welcomed it What will happen now: – Objective/constructive suggestions will be addressed – Everyone’s key will/must be registered Following that: I hope more people will use it (i.e. people start to “vote” with their feet) I like to understand what would be the real advantages by enforcing it for everyone as opposed to just letting people decide themselves individually how to print – If convincing real advantages exist: a Yes/No vote? – If no convincing real advantages exist: just leave it?

Web-based uren registratie Many Nikhef’ers already do this (1-2 minutes/week) – Engineers, technicians, physicists with EU project links,.. Nikhef has very diffuse holiday registration – Mail, paper, web-based, nothing, … More and more people (PhD students) claim €’s So: everyone (FOM employee) should use it at least for holidays registration – ideally also for research (easy: all else = ATLAS, LHCb, …) – and to make me (and Auke-Pieter) really happy: please also indicate teaching & outreach activities! (will make it easy to find volunteers in the future!)

Mobile phones: tomorrow!

KM3NeT (I/IV) Nikhef has a lot at stake at KM3NeT: – Prestigious & large investment subsidy (8.8 M€) – Maarten de Jong is KM3NeT spokesman – Nikhef (with Greece) got KM3NeT on the ESFRI list – Nikhef got KM3NeT on the Dutch National Roadmap (NIOZ, KVI) – Technology is to a very large extend ‘made in Holland’ – Netherlands might host KM3NeT headquarters (ERIC) So: I will do the maximum to make it a success My view: – Technology is sound (but requires more prototype testing) – As off FEB/2013 KM3NeT has a decent management team – Multi-site is non-issue (provided new site bring in >20M€) – Physics case could be stronger, but at least continues to become more convincing: ν-point sources, ν-mass hierarchy, … – KM3NeT collaboration (overall & NL) requires strengthening …

KM3NeT (II/IV) Milestones: – Extensive prototype testing in 2013 – Stepwise Engineering Design Report(s) in 2013 – Early 2014: Freeze design Prepare serial production – As of summer 2014: start deployments – End of 2014: (non negotiable, EU funding constraints) >10 strings deployed; >1 strings in DAQ i.e. being read-out – End of 2015 (non negotiable, EU funding constraints) >50 strings deployed; many of them also in DAQ Clear physics program i.e. sparse versus dense, 5σ discover potential Prospects of continued funding i.e. towards 200 M€ (40 M€ now) Larger collaboration (Greece? Germany? Russia? Outside Europe?)

KM3NeT (III/IV) And now what? At Nikhef KM3NeT needs strengthening, I need help Needed: – Physicists (at least 3 fte) – projectleaders – programleader (from within or outside present group) – excellent team of engineers & technicians Ideally: such that we will realize the real KM3NeT! If not: to avoid that we at some moment look back to conclude: we should have put more effort in it

KM3NeT needs you! (IV/IV)

Bronkhorst As input to the “platformoverleg” we will distribute our (DT) considerations 1-March-2013 Generalities: – Room for new hirings is very limited – Program(leaders) will get more autonomy Separate proposal will be send to PGLs for discussion – LHC upgrades will be approved gradually, also to keep some flexibility in the technical departments in view of e.g. an eventual ILC activity. Focus on silicon trackers! – Improve Nikhef productivity (also a way to boost output!) – More structure in meetings & frequencies – More uniformity/structure in procedures, tools, …

European Particle Physics Strategy Circulated draft statement already What do you want to know?

18-19 april Nikhef SAC meeting SAC members: – Yannis Karyotakis – Christian Spiering – (Catherine deClercq) – Andre Rubbia – Tatsuya Nakada – Bryan Webber – Jurgen Schukraft

LHC physics FOM-program Panel members? – Criteria: sufficient distance, standing, at most four, … Please note: just a proposal & very confidential!
