Early Life Born a slave to Hugh Auld Hugh’s wife, Sophia, broke the law and taught him how to read Traded his food with the local boys to teach him how to read Taught other slaves how to read Why was reading such an important skill that the masters did not want the slaves to have?

Frederick Escapes Tried to escape twice before he succeeded Dressed up as a sailor and borrowed a free man’s papers Boarded a train and went to New York Began speaking to groups of people about slavery Became a member of the Anti-Slavery Society – Abolitionist

Life as an escaped slave…. Went to Ireland and Britain to avoid being recaptured. His friends raised money to buy his freedom He returned to America in 1847 as a free man! He lived in New York He began speaking for the rights of all people – Women – African Americans – Everyone! He even became friends with Hugh Auld!
