Value Weaving Procedures: 1.Choose two pictures that have a common theme or idea. Find one that is predominantly darker and the other lighter. Both foregrounds must take up a majority of their composition. There should be very little background and at least one must include a portrait. Cut them to the same size in something that is in even inches. (Recommended 4”x6” for 1:2 ratio grid)
2
2. Measure in inch units, leaving marks on opposite sides of the image. Use a ruler and pencil to lightly connect the opposite marks. Use the same unit for the second image. Be certain one is broken into rows and the other into columns!
3
3. Cut the first picture into vertical 1" strips keeping them together at the bottom or top. 4. Cut the second picture horizontally in 1" strips.
4
5. Tape the vertical one onto a page in your sketchbook on the top.
5
6. Begin weaving the other picture over and under, starting with the taped corner. Square it up tightly and then tape it on the sides. Repeat this until all the picture is done.
6
7. Tape around all four sides and begin to reveal some squares to show more of one picture and so forth until you like the composition. You can eliminate rows and squares that are not important by placing the square on top with more significance.
7
8. Once your composition is set, label columns consecutively by letters, then label rows consecutively by numbers.
8
9. Lightly create a larger grid centered on a 12”x18” piece of white paper, using a 1:2 ratio and ruler. It must be gridded with the same amount of squares! 10. Label your grid with the same rows and columns as your picture grid. Ex: Every 1 inch of the photo grid equals 2 inches on the drawing -or- Every ½ inch of the photo equals 1 inch on the drawing. 11. Using graphite pencils, recreate the values and textures in each corresponding square.
