Main schools of geopolitics and their implementations in the CN Classical geopolitics: occupation and control of physical space, power politics of a state – e.g. the resource models, the technology models New geopolitics: geo-economics, actors and identities – e.g. Indigenous peoples as actors, the Northern Dimension Critical geopolitics: politicization of physical space, importance of social space, interrelation between knowledge and power – e.g. Arctic images, uncertainty of climate change

Detailed focus areas II Studies on Security and different security dimensions (incl. traditional, environmental and human security) -E.g. how different paradigms and discourses on security are presented and implemented in the CN -E.g. special features of Northern security -E.g. changes in problem definition on security discourses, premises and paradigm(s) -E.g. security dimension of climate change

The main aim To combine the two focus areas together, promote interdisciplinarity, and draw up a holistic picture on Northern (geo)politics To identify and analyze key indicators of the geopolitics of a changing North To identify and analyze key (special) features of the security of a changing North

Planned activities Annual workshops, both back-to-back to int. meetings and together with TN on Governance and TN on Local and Regional Development To implement the interplay between research and teaching (senior scientists and young researchers), science and politics, and scientific and traditional knowledge(s) To act as a platform for UArctic Institute for Applied Circumpolar Policy and Northern Research Forum Joint efforts to establish international research projects
