Using Effective Instruction To Ensure That All Students Learn Presentation to KPBSD Certified Staff Dr. Steve Atwater, Superintendent 8-14-12
2
First things first, what is your excitement level for being back at work?
4
Today’s Presentation We are using Microsoft Lync to send this talk from Homer to Kenai, Seward and Soldotna MS Lync is a peer-to-peer communication system that easily ties into MS Office. Our new Polycom bridge will allow us to host multiple lines at the same time. Thanks to Eric Soderquist and Ted Notter for making this possible- they leapt tall buildings in a single bound to make this happen Also thanks to Michelle Thomason, Doris Cannon and Jamie Myers for sweating the details of what is going on at four sites today

Looking Back, One Year Later Are We A Stronger District? Review our internal processes Review SBA data for the whole district Review SBA data for boys and girls- reading and writing
12
Are we stronger? Yes, internal processes (standardization) are better than they were BEFORE TODAY Management software, assessment dashboard, curriculum development, recruitment, critical review of programs, instructional technology, professional development, communication, effective instruction and evaluation
13
Curriculum Development Before Now No Pacing Curriculum paced by quarter K 12 Resources disjointed K-12 approach to resources = common vocab, continuity Disjointed accountability End of quarter assessments Written in segments Written in K-12 continuum
14
Technology In last three years amount of hardware in our schools has grown enormously Management software is much better Electronic assessment of data (dashboard)
15
Intervention Alert Bar in PowerSchool Thanks to David Henson for making this possible 1. Behind on graduation credits 2. Core course failures 3. Absent rate 4. Non-Proficient test scores 5. Poor GPA 6. Economically Disadvantaged (disabled by default)
17
Our internal capacity and processes to support student learning are improving, we are getting stronger. What about test scores? We continue to be well above the state average, but seem to be hitting the ceiling
18
KPBSD and AYP – Slight Improvement 70% of KPBSD schools made AYP in 2012 (up from 68% in 2011) compared to 46.5 % of Alaska’s schools AMO stayed the same but more targets FY11 31 targets to make AYP FY12 31 targets for 3-8 and 40 targets for schools with a 12 th grade Other large districts in Alaska for FY12 Anchorage41.7% made AYP Mat Su50% made AYP Fairbanks 42.8% made AYP

21
2012 SBA % Proficient by Grade
22
2012 SBA Average Scale Score by Grade
23
Take Aways from FY12 SBA Data Reading 9/10 students are proficient Average score peaks in 3 rd grade Writing 17/20 students are proficient Average score peaks in 4 th grade Math 15/20 students are proficient Average score peaks in 3 rd grade
24
We are not getting the students on the edge to move into the proficiency range proficient
25
Can’t blame it on SPED KPBSD Students who do not have an IEP 5% are not proficient in reading 10 % are not proficient in writing 16% are not proficient in math Take away is that we must keep thinking in terms of improving and not keep doing what we are doing
26
Comparing Boys and Girls SBA Results (Reading)
27
(Writing)
28
(Math)
29
Take Aways with Boys and Girls KPBSD girls consistently outperform their male peers Boys are not acquiring writing skills very well Does this disparity exist in your school? Lots of theories for how to make school more boy friendly- encourage you to be aware of this disparity and work to close the gap
30
Four Questions Guiding our Improvements to support instruction What do KPBSD students need to know? How do you know that KPBSD students know it? What do you do if KPBSD students don’t know it? What do you do you if KPBSD students already know it?
31
KPBSD, climbing the improvement hill, trying to make it to the school at the top Effective Instruction Collaboration technology Professional development reporting curriculum Strategic plan communication
32
So, why aren’t we climbing the hill faster? Lots of variables affect student performance. Let’s not focus or blame those that we can’t control Our job is to tend to those variables that we can affect, to focus on the ones that are preventing our students from learning
33
Instruction, the variable that we can control Use the four questions at the classroom level Lean on your neighbors and work as a team- take advantage of collaboration as a way to address specific challenges Make the most of your evaluation or your teacher enrichment pathway When students don’t have success, first ask, “is it me?”
34
When you peel away the layers, what you find is that those variables that are tied to the structure of school are getting in the way - are preventing us from getting closer to the school on the hill Examples: How students are distributed in schools, how we define student proficiency, how we report student progress, 90 day break during summer Structural Variables Also Getting in the Way
35
An HRO depends on attaining the right balance District Standardization Improvisation/site identity KPBSD striving to become a Highly Reliable Organization by eliminating the variables that cause inconsistencies This is your charge
36
KPBSD’s Strategic Plan, Guiding our Improvement for Next Five Years Stakeholder Input Mission and vision statements Focus areas Goals Action steps
37
Organizational Excellence Academic Success Community and Family Engagement KPBSD: Three Focus Areas
38
Some general education news that you need to know about
39
Big picture of education- it is not getting simpler The external forces that affect education are increasing More instability and uncertainty are headed our way We are being asked to do more and more beyond the scope of academics to meets society’s needs New this year is mandatory training in recognizing students who may be considering suicide
40
External Forces Not Getting Weaker Federal ESEA Reauthorization State Waiver from some of ESEA Teacher evaluation and student growth State standards and assessment SBA-last year 2015 Common Core
41
Don’t Settle for, “This is how we always do it.” Be Creative
42
Stop and breathe when you feel the arrows start to turn inward educator serve students
43
Take care of yourself, pull over when you are tired
44
Let’s do everything that we can to meet all our students’ needs
45
Have a great year!
