Thomas Eakins “Gross Clinic” Eakins was one of the finest painters America has produced. He traveled to Europe. When he returned with a dedication to paint only Realistic facts and not to explore imagination and sentiment. Eakins stressed realism and accuracy. His perspectives were accurate because they were measured and plotted mathematically before the painting begun. Eakins most powerful painting was the “Gross Clinic” painted for Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Story of painting Dr. Samuel Gross, scalpel in hand turns away from the beginning surgery to talk to his students. Winslow Homer and Thomas Eakins were the cornerstone of Realism in America.
