One theme represented in the Japanese folktale, “The Emperor’s Seed” involves maintaining the courage it takes to be an honest and upright person. As explained in the story, Ling was worried about that his seed was not germinating. However, he remained honest, and did not replace the seed with another seed the way the other youths did. It took courage for him to bring his empty pot to the emperor, but his refusal to replace the defective seed results in the emperor choosing him to be the next emperor. His honesty was much appreciated by the emperor, and it paid off greatly.
