3. Philanthropic Grants Many grant awards from foundations and organizations, including those that are research focused, qualify as gift income. These philanthropic grants – as we all know – require OSP guidance and management. They also need to be booked as gifts, but because we have two systems, we do not have an automated process. If in doubt as to whether a grant opportunity is from a philanthropic, or non-governmental, entity (such as an association, organization, trust, or fund), please reach out to CFR. We will not slow the process down and will provide added-value.

5. Added Value from CFR CFR officers help manage the relationships with representatives of foundations and other grant makers and we provide input on strategy. We provide and often request examples of successful proposals. We sit in on webinars and make sure we have all the latest and most relevant information as related to any grant opportunity. We make sure that we don’t have four proposals going to the same funder at once. We edit and help shape proposals over several iterations. We are familiar with the grant cycles and particular funding interests of foundations, even their idiosyncracies Provide stewardship, including visits, events, and regular contact with program officers

The Council for Aid to Education (CAE) collects this data from institutions through the Voluntary Support of Education (VSE), a report that publishes the results of an annual survey of colleges and universities. Through this data, we are benchmarked against all other universities in the nation. The VSE is considered the definitive source of information on private giving to educational institutions in the U.S. – both to higher ed and to private K-12 institutions. Through its web-based data miner, CAE provides advancement professionals with over 300 variables related to fundraising each year. Where does this data about Clemson come from?

9. What Does this Mean? Our numbers look low nationally and against our peer institutions. We believe that over $16 million from the last couple of years has not been counted in the campaign even though the dollars are philanthropic and come from philanthropic foundations or organizations. Foundations are going to become an even more important part of our strategy as we strive to increase our research dollars from 70 million annually to 140 million as part of 2020 Forward. Prestigious awards, such as the Searle Scholars Program awards and HHMI Investigator awards, can leverage future awards for faculty members and research teams. There will be higher research (as noted above) and fundraising goals for Clemson in the future. In 2015, less than 1% of the nation’s colleges raised 28.7% of all gifts – we want Clemson to get a better share of the funds out there!!!

10. Next Steps Continuing to cooperate on proposals prior to submission. Monitoring the weekly proposals under development and submitted lists and making sure we know which philanthropic funders have proposals from us in the queue (in case something happens at the pre-submission stage). Running a quarterly query in InfoEd to track awards that come in. Bi-monthly Grant Seeking Forum – cosponsored by OSP, CFR, and the Watt Family Innovation Center. Establishment of a new Grant Seeking Advisory Committee – effective this spring. New “Foundation Corner” in Research Roar and participation in “Tips of the Day” section.
