Comprehensive Student Record Project Overview - AACC, 4/2016 2 Why now? 1.Assessment of learning is being driven by accreditation and calls for us to declare more than courses taken, grades and degrees as evidence of learning. 2.Technology allows institutions and students to represent learning and achievement in ways that were not possible in the past: –Online social media sites, such as LinkedIn, are used to represent academic achievements with little or no validation by higher education institutions. –Colleges and schools can produce certificates and other documents that appear “official” without any interaction with the Registrar. 3.Widespread acceptance that learning happens beyond the classroom.

Comprehensive Student Record Project Overview - AACC, 4/2016 3 Why now? 4.Traditional transcript has value within higher education but little and decreasing value outside of our sector: –Most employers today do not use or value transcripts as a means to select employees. 5.Multiple initiatives emerging from academic and student life areas: –Many are being driven by vendors telling higher education what they can do and not by higher education telling vendors what they need. –Micro-credentialing is driving some needs for intermediary records. 6.Direct assessment or Competency-Based Education is incompatible with traditional transcript formats.
