3 Lesson Overview Lesson: Color Wheel/Color Relationship Time: 60 minutes Medium: Paper, Watercolors Project Overview/Skills This lesson reviews primary, secondary and complementary colors. Students will create a landscape using line and color to reflect mood and feeling. When Cats Dream by Dav Pilkey (contains some images akin to the artist Marc Chagall) 3. “Fibber Island” lyrics by They Might Be Giants (see lesson box)--the kids love it if you can download the song to play

4 Materials Needed Watercolor pencils Crayons Paint Brushes (2 sizes--large for background, small for details) Paper cups for water Paper towels Watercolor Paper, 11x15 (landscape position) Scratch Paper Blue Painter’s masking tape (optional) Color Wheel (optional)

10 Step 1- What do we mean by wacky world? Something that is the wrong color – Blue banana Something that serves a similar purpose – Clock for a sun – Teacups for clouds Silly idea – Ice cream cone flowers

11 Step 2- Sketch your design Draw a scene that is slightly odd or has visual jokes Use pencil on scratch paper 3-5 big objects Details can be added later

12 Step 3- Crayons on watercolor paper transfer your final design LIGHTLY with pencil Draw over pencil FIRMLY with crayon Add details – Dots, patterns, leaves, highlights… What will happen when you add watercolor?

13 Step 4- Watercolors Use colors creatively Where can you use complimentary colors?
