Chapter 2

 When is the last time you read a newspaper ▪ Why did you look at it ▪ What section did you read

 What newspaper readers want to read?  5 traditional roles that newspapers serve ▪ Commercial ▪ Information ▪ Opinion ▪ Public Forum ▪ Entertainment

 The key to writing a feature people will like is to remember ▪ They are “Thing” & “People” oriented  News characteristics also help (pg 37) ▪ Conflict ▪ Human Interest ▪ Importance ▪ Prominence ▪ Proximity ▪ Timeliness ▪ Unusualness

 How to get Ideas ▪ Sometimes they come from the editor  Writers also ▪ Read newspapers and magazines ▪ National articles and area news that can be turned into a feature ▪ Read internet tip columns ▪ Get ideas from TV broadcasts or specials ▪ Ideas are also developed from feature categories ▪ List of types from Chapter 1

 Focusing Ideas  When developing a feature ▪ Don’t start with a huge idea like “Missing Children” ▪ Focus on a specific element like “Teenage Runaways” ▪ Then look for a story under that idea ▪ “Mother searches for and finds teenage daughter” ▪ Lack of focus will waste lots of time

 Broad Topics ▪ Earthquakes ▪ The Economy ▪ Upcoming Elections ▪ Education ▪ Human Interest ▪ Give me a good feature idea that can be developed from this broad topic
