Creating a children’s picture book Day by day activities and expectations

Day 1, Wednesday In groups of 3, each of you are to read your book out loud. After reading the book, individually write down three reasons why the book is your favorite on page 50 of Student Interactive Notebook (SIN) Pick up a Children’s Book Review Guide (omit step 1) Answer the questions from step 2 on the rest of page 50, you may continue to page 51. Do NOT go to page 52

Day 2, Thursday In partners (two people), you will be composing the text and illustrations for your own children’s picture book.

Writing A Story Task: Plan a creative story to promote an area of development for an age group between ages 2-9; it must have speech, punctuation and original illustrations in it, it must also be at least 10 pages long. Minimum requirements are as follows: 3 Different locations/scenes /15 pts 4 Well developed characters/20 pts 1 Conflict/Resolution/10 pts Proper moral of story for age group/10 pts Proper sentence structure for age group Spelling, grammar, punctuation/10 pts Original Illustrations/15 pts 10 Pages/10 pts Elements of a book O A cover with title, authors, illustrators O Title/Dedication page O Description of book on the back, possibly include “reviews” /10 pts Total:/100 pts

Day 2, Thursday What are some themes you noticed in the books you read yesterday? Acceptance of others Concern of family Dynamics Physical Growth Fear of the unknown Why do you think these themes resonate with you listeners? Share any connections you remember while reading yesterday or from your own experiences

Day 2: I Remember Journal Entry Turn your SIN to page 52 Describe a memory you have as a journal entry. Address all five of the senses when recounting your memory This does not have to be a complete memory, you may imagine or make up details that you cannot remember Please finish this for homework This entry can serve as a plot line for your story

Days 3 and 4, Friday and Monday The next few days you will be gathering details about your story, developing plots, storyboarding, writing and illustrating, and then publishing the book. Brainstorming: With your partner (or alone if you choose)brainstorm ideas for your story. Expand on the information from your journal entry by brainstorming additional details. Tips for Writing a Children’s Picture Story Book- this handout is located on the school website. Please take some time to read this entire handout so you and your partner have a clear understanding of how to write a book

Days 3 and 4, Friday and Monday Use the Story Map interactive to create a print out the following graphic organizers:Story Map o Character map (1 for EACH character) o Conflict map o Resolution map o Setting map (1 for EACH setting) When you have finished your maps, pick up a “Brainstorming the Conflict” chart. Fill it out to test out potential conflicts by identifying the complications that would or could result from attempting to solve them. ALL OF THESE ARE DUE WHEN YOU COME TO CLASS TUESDAY. USE YOUR TIME WISELY!

Day 4, Monday Continue working on the following maps: o Character o Conflict o Resolution o Setting Read through Tips for Writing a Children’s Picture Storybook (Resources for HGD on school website) Once you have met with me: WHEN YOU ARE COMPLETELY FINISHED, BRING ME YOUR PAPERS, I want to go over them with your group. Once you have met with me: YOU MAY BEGIN DEVLOPING A “PLOT PITCH”

Day 5, Tuesday Any volunteers to share your work? Read through the Plot Pitch Template (resources on school website), you may print it if you wish. o Be sure to answer the questions at the bottom of the page Use the Plot Diagram Link to construct a Plot Map to print- you may collaborate and share to get more ideas!Plot Diagram Link Draw a sketch of your main character and the setting in which the story takes place

Day 6, Wednesday Pitching the Plot Get ALL of your papers together: o Character map s (4), Conflict map, resolution map, setting map s (3), Brainstorming the conflict, Plot Diagram, Plot Pitch Template Does anyone have ANY questions regarding the story? Exchange your story with another group/person to get feedback. Do this at least twice. Review the responses and add details or revisions to your work

Day 7, Thursday STORYBOARDS- Today you will be creating a storyboard for your book Start by dividing several regular sheets of paper into four to six boxes (you’ll need a box for each page, including the cover). You may fold the paper to ensure straight lines

Day 7, Thursday STORYBOARDS Only use one side of the paper so you can move them around your storyboard poster Sketch the illustrations and text for each page and the cover in a pane of the storyboard. The goal should be to create a balance of text and illustrations that tell your story. These rough sketches, not their final illustrations. Getting the idea across is the goal. Experiment with the location, size, and amount of text and illustrations on each page.

Days 8 and 9, Friday and Tuesday (No school Mon.) Producing the Book Review Expectations, look through past projects Publishing TechniquesPublishing Techniques: o Staple pages together o Use yarn to bind book Harold and the Purple Crayon These should be ready to read on Wednesday January 20, I MAY give ONE more day if needed.
