DEPARTMENT FOR EDUCATION Pupils should be taught to speak clearly and convey ideas confidently using Standard English. They should learn to justify ideas with reasons; ask questions to check understanding; develop vocabulary and build knowledge; negotiate; evaluate and build on the ideas of others; and select the appropriate register for effective communication. They should be taught to give well-structured descriptions and explanations and develop their understanding through speculating, hypothesising and exploring ideas. This will enable them to clarify their thinking as well as organise their ideas for writing.

STANDARD ENGLISH 1. I’d like one of them cakes. 2. My uncle gave me this book whenever I was born. 3. It was thunder what we heard. 4. Mum learned me to ride a bike. 5. He never! 6. It’s right hot!

SPEAKING AND LISTENING ACTIVITIES AT LRS We are constantly striving to demonstrate the use of Standard English in our speech to support the children’s own speech and writing. We do this through: Whole class, group and one-to-one work with pupils Reading of class texts (reading across the curriculum) Telling stories Modelled conversations between staff in front of the children

ENSURING THE CHILDREN ARE LISTENING, ACTIVELY Concentrate on the speaker Look at the speaker Do not interrupt the speaker Try not to fidget Smile and nod Ask questions to develop conversation

USE OF TALK PARTNERS Across the curriculum, children are encouraged to talk with their partners to develop their learning Some examples of conversations are shared with the class This helps to develop the children’s confidence in their speaking and listening skills

CONFIDENCE TO SPEAK IN FRONT OF LARGER AUDIENCES We also try to build the children’s confidence with different forms of public speaking. Sometimes this will be addressed through the sharing of work. We also encourage cooperative learning through the application of speaking and listening skills.

SOME EXAMPLES OF CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES TO DEVELOP SPEAKING AND LISTENING SKILLS Role play – children in character Interviews Hot seating Short dramatic performances Freeze-frames

TALK FOR WRITING Talk for Writing enables children to imitate the key language they need for a particular topic orally before they try reading and analysing it. Through fun activities that help them rehearse the tune of the language they need, followed by shared writing to show them how to craft their writing, children are helped to write in the same style.
