The type of clothing worn depends on physical, social and geographical considerations. Clothing styles can explain many facts about the culture and history of a specific society.

On the Ottoman period; clothing was showing people’s religion, jobs and statude. Turkish and western artists have long been fascinated by the rich variety of Turkish dress of both sexes.

We have devided our history into 2 phases and examine the journey of clothes chronologically. Republic Period Clothes Ottoman Period Clothes

On the Ottoman period; clothes color, was as important as clothes material. Clothes color was showing people’s social scale. The color and the material of the clothes which was clothing by sultans was forbidden for Ottoman public. The clothes was changing according to time and place. The clothes which was clothing at ceremony and at war was different from the clothes which was clothing everyday.

In Ottoman palaces clothing was very important for sultans. Sultans kaftans (clothes) were made very lux and expensive materials.

Ottoman woman’s important clothes were şalvar, hırka, entari, kaftan and gömlek. Ottoman woman’s kaftans were looking like Ottoman man’s.

Sultan’s clothes materials were very expensive. These materials were silk and had gold and silver lines.

Atatürk was the founder of the new Turkish Government. Atatürk’s aim was to modernize and develop Turkish government with the reforms.

There were also reforms about dressing from 1925 to 1934. In this period, men were wearing hats and women were wearing modern clothes.

After clothes reforms, younger women have liked modern clothes. They were wearing popular dresses and hats. The older women were wearing more covered than young women.
