2 01122009Karl Plsek BMG II/B/72 GIs for Foodstuffs, Spirits and Wines- Verification and Control Issues - Austria For official control and verification in Austria a geographical indication (GI) is a name or sign used on certain products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin (eg. a town, region, or country). The use of a GI may act as a certification that the product possesses certain qualities, or enjoys a certain reputation, due to its geographical origin.

5 01122009Karl Plsek BMG II/B/75 GIs for Foodstuffs, Spirits and Wines- Verification and Control Issues - Austria According to the qualification of the GI‘s (from simple labelling of the origin to specifications that the product possesses certain qualities, or enjoys a certain reputation, due to its geographical origin) there are different national competent authorities designated in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 882/2004

6 01122009Karl Plsek BMG II/B/76 GIs for Foodstuffs, Spirits and Wines- Verification and Control Issues - Austria For qualified GI‘s according to the EC – Regulations 510/2006 (PDO, PGI) and 111/2009 (spirits) the control of the specifications is delegated to control bodies, working as accredited certification bodies in accordance with EN 45011 Market control by the competent authority
