1 Finding and Using Labour Market Information with Students Jan Moore, Manchester Metropolitan University Katie Dallison, The Careers Group, University of London GLAM - Graduate Labour Market Task Group

2 Today’s plan To identify valid resources of labour market information for use with students To construct ways to help students understand LMI and the role the media plays in delivering messages around the graduate labour market To gain new ideas of how to use LMI with students, both in groups and individually To construct meaningful case studies using LMI to engage students in the realities of the graduate labour market

3 So what is LMI? The Labour Market is the supply of people in a particular country or area who are able and willing to work Cambridge Dictionary online Information: facts provided or learned about something or someone Oxford online dictionary

4 So what is it? Formal LMI - DLHE, Highfliers, AGR, ONS Interpreted LMI - Formal LMI reported in the news Informal LMI - Blogs, opinions, unsighted sources Assumed LMI - ‘Everyone knows…’ (gossip?)

5 Some numbers… Number of people in Employment: 29.27 million Number of people unemployed: 2.49 million ONS website as at 17 August 2011 Total Qualifications gained in the UK: 716940 2009-2010 DLHE surveyed 379 865 people (HESA)

6 Where do you find it? Split into groups and share where you find your LMI at the moment. –Websites –Books/Journals –Newspapers –Blogs –People/Organisations

8 How is The Times table calculated? Student Satisfaction - NSS Research Quality – RAE Entrance Standards – HESA Student/Staff ratio – HESA Services and Facilities spend – HESA Completion – HESA Good Honours – HESA Graduate Prospects - DLHE

9 Your turn In groups you each have a typical news item based on LMI Come up with a way to explain what the scary headlines actually mean How would this differ between student groups? i.e. arts students to economics students?

10 Got it, explained it, but how do we use it? Balloon myth busting top tips: Choose good quality balloons so you can get the sweets (chuppa chups work well) go in easily. Use white board (not flip chart) markers to write myths on balloon Don’t hand out too early to an enthusiastic crowd…
