7
Three Reasons Why Press/Library Partnerships Make Sense
8
Sociopolitical Advantage UNIVERSITY PRESS Becomes more central to campus organizationally (sometimes also physically). Learns from other information professionals. Has a voice in the library community to promote appreciation of publishing value-add. LIBRARY Gains more understanding of faculty as authors, not just users, of information. Becomes therefore more credible in supporting them around data, OA, rights, etc. Has a voice in the publishing community to advocate for change.
9
Degree of institutional (vs. disciplinary) focus Degree of formal publishing intervention

11
Economic Advantage UNIVERSITY PRESS Spreads overhead costs to achieve more financial security. Has some budget protection thanks to a larger parent. Better understands its key customer, libraries. LIBRARY Acquires a channel for earned revenue. Learns more about publishing costs to inform negotiations. Gains insights into its suppliers.
12
- within institution $3.5 m in sales revenue pa. $1 m in University support pa. < 2% of Library budget but other in- kind support from Library, e.g., space, IT, HR
13
- across institutions Agnes Scott Allegheny Amherst Atlanta Univ Ctr Bard Bates Berea Bowdoin Carleton Claremont Colleges Coe College of St. Benedict/St. John’s Denison University Earlham Furman University Grinnell Hamilton Haverford Kenyon St. Lawrence Knox Lafayette Lake Forest Macalester Middlebury Oberlin Rollins Sewanee Skidmore Smith St. Olaf Swarthmore Trinity University Union Ursinus Vassar Washington & Lee Whitman Williams College of Wooster
14
Technological Advantage UNIVERSITY PRESS Gains access to electronic infrastructure such as the repositories. Learns digital skills and has expert support, e.g., in metadata, visualization. Can more fully participate in larger initiatives, e.g., DataCite, ORCID. LIBRARY Learns publishing workflows and processes. Rejuvenates repositories by reconceptualizing them as publishing platforms. Gains access to the information supply chain as a producer not just consumer of content.
