Update
18
www.bonner.org The Bonner Program: Update in five areas 1)Community Partnerships 2)Student Development 3)Campus Collaborations 4)Web-Based Tools 5)National & International Networking
19
www.bonner.org The Bonner Program: Meaningful community partnerships & placements ★ 67% programs have site/issue-based teams in place at some or all sites ★ Yet, average self-assessment is at level 3 ★ Many programs believe they still are challenged with implementing best practices for the basics, such as ✓ partner selection ✓ understanding of the developmental model, ✓ co-educator strategies, ✓ partner evaluation. The average self- assessment for these items is at level 3.
20
www.bonner.org The Bonner Program: Student development via placements & training — 1 ★ Frequent and sequential training and meeting opportunities ✓ majority of programs have adopted class or cohort meetings ✓ many now alternate these meetings with issue-oriented training and problem-solving sessions ✓ many cite their work to create or refine a training curriculum and link them with group projects
21
www.bonner.org The Bonner Program: Student development via placements & training — 2 ★ Increase in relevant coursework and academic- service connections, including in: ✓ issue-oriented campus campaigns or awareness efforts ✓ PolicyOptions issue brief research ✓ CBR project assignments ✓ faculty-team connections ✓ required or recommended courses ✓ more robust academic programs (such as minors) ★ This area, however, seems to be the one where most growth and refinement is desired by campuses.
22
www.bonner.org The Bonner Program: Student development via placements & training — 3 ★ Experiments in developing deeper reflection, in individual and group settings, esp. through critical inquiry ✓ innovative social media applications, such as blogging ✓ e-portfolios (using rubrics such as those from the American Association of Colleges and Universities VALUE initiative ✓ conversations with peers and advisors ★ Foundation hopes to produce new educational and reflection materials ✓ help students make the connection between their community service work and public policy analysis ✓ including uncovering root causes and potential solutions
23
www.bonner.org The Bonner Program: Campus-Wide Collaborations ★ The infrastructure for sustained work is strong. ✓ 66% of programs believe their collaboration with key departments is strong or comprehensive (levels 4-5) ✓ less than 5% of programs believe it is non-existent or minimal ✓ Programs cite stronger collaborations with Multicultural Affairs, Career Services, and Student Services/Involvement ★ Yet many programs still struggle around recruitment and selection issues ✓ want stronger methods to work with Admissions, Financial Aid, and Work Study offices
24
www.bonner.org The Bonner Program: Web-based Tools for Program Management ★ Many campuses have adopted strong program management techniques and do high-quality tracking in BWBRS ✓ national review of positions, trainings, & CLAs has helped ✓ goal of 80% students on track with logging hours ★ Amazed by the creativity and depth with which many programs have explored and applied social media tools ✓ more than 120 videos ✓ positive impact reported by students & partners, not so clear from staff members
25
www.bonner.org The Bonner Program: National & International Networking ★ Build the capacity of our network through... ✓ professional development initiative ✓ Bonner alumni network ★ Forge connections to the broader national and international network of change-oriented organizations and networks ✓ issue- and policy-focused groups (e.g., hunger and food security, college access, etc.) ✓ international service initiative
