CULTURAL BASICS Culture – values, material artifacts, & political institutions (Chp. 1) Emphasis on material artifacts in Chp. 4 Clothing, shelter, & food Leisure activities (i.e. arts & recreation) Terms Habit – repetitive act of an individual Custom – repetitive act of a group, done so often it is a characteristic of the group Folk culture – practiced in relative isolation by a homogeneous group of people often in rural areas Popular (pop) culture – large, heterogeneous societies sharing certain habits despite differences in other personal characteristics (language, religion, etc.)
