Computer Worms Self Replicating Usually uses networks to spread Protect against worms using – Firewalls – Antivirus/antispyware – must be up to date – Security updates

Trojan Horses Looks like something you want to use Really it steals information or harms the system Gives hackers the ability to see what you’re doing on your computer

Rootkits Uses a vulnerability to infiltrate the computer and gain root-level access Usually used as malware to hide applications by bypassing normal authentication methods Removal is best when you use an alternate booting mode and run antimalware utilities

Spyware Spyware collects smalls pieces of information – Things like keyloggers – Tracking cookies Appears harmless – Hides malicious functions Most anti-virus programs will remove spyware

Adware Some Adware can be considered spyware Adware usually poses as programs meant to help, like antivirus/malware removal software
