3 NOTE: Order is important when writing SUBTRACTION AND DIVISION!!

4 Translate into an expression 1. The sum of 6 and a number y 2. Seven less than twice a number z + 6 y <- NOT Correct! “less than” means switch! y + 6 - 7 2z OR 2z - 7

5 Write an expression for the situation 3. Number of minutes in s seconds 4. Number of candies from a 12 pack left to eat if you’ve eaten z candies We know 60 seconds in one minute so: - 12 z

6 Rates n4n4 Rate: fraction that compares two quantities measured in different units Unit Rate: Example: miles per hour, Calories per serving.

7 Unit rates 5. Find the unit rate: Word Problems: 6. Jenny earns $50 a day working part time at a supermarket. Write an algebraic expression to represent the amount of money she will earn in d days. How much money will she have made after 5 days of working? 60 miles per hour a. 50 * d or 50d Think: Would I use +, -, * or ÷ b. In 5 days: 50d = 50(5) = $250
