What is an organelle? Challenge: how can you tell a plant cell from an animal cell?
3
An organelle is a part of a cell that does a specific job within the cell. It is like a tiny organ inside a cell. Challenge: You can tell a plant cell and an animal cell apart because they have different organelles.
6
1.Organelle – a specialized part of a cell that has a specific function (plant/animal) 2.cell membrane – the outside part of a cell that acts as a barrier (plant/animal) 3.Cytoplasm - a clear, gel-like substance inside a cell that contains the organelles (plant/animal) 4.Nucleus – an organelle in the cell that contains DNA; the genetic information of the cell (plant/animal) 5.Mitochondria – an organelle that converts energy to a form that the cell can use (plant/animal) 6.Endoplasmic reticulum (E.R.) – an organelle that helps produce and transport proteins (plant/animal) 7.Golgi Apparatus – an organelle that makes, holds, and transports cellular materials (plant/animal) 8.Lysosome – an organelle that aids in the digestion and recycling of cellular material. (plant/animal)
7
9.Ribosome – an organelle that assembles proteins for use in the body (animal) 10.chloroplasts – an organelle found in plant cells that contains the chlorophyll (plant) 11.cell wall – a rigid protective layer found outside a cell membrane of plant cells (plant) 12.Vacuoles – a fluid filled organelle (mostly plant) 13.Photosynthesis – the process in plant cells that converts sunlight and other molecules into sugar that can be used as energy 14.Prokaryotic – a type of simple cell that does not have a true nucleus. 15.Eukaryotic – a cell that has a membrane bound nucleus that separates the DNA from the rest of the cell 16.Homeostasis – the process of maintaining a stable internal environment in response to outside environmental changes. 17.cellular respiration – the process by which cells harvest energy stored in food
