Abdulkadir ErdenFundamentals of Engineering2 What is Engineering?
3
Abdulkadir ErdenFundamentals of Engineering3 Definition of Engineering 1 It (Engineering) is an outlook that generates its strength and its grandeur not in discovery of facts but in their application, not in receiving but in giving. It is an outlook that requires the many tools of science and ability to manipulate them intelligently. It is a welding of theory and practice to build an early, strong, and useful result.

Abdulkadir ErdenFundamentals of Engineering4 Definition of Engineering 2 "Fulfilling human needs is the primary reason for the existence of engineering“
5
Abdulkadir ErdenFundamentals of Engineering5 Definition of Engineering 3 "that branch of human endeavor by which the forces of nature are brought under human control and the properties of matter made useful in structures and machines".
6
Abdulkadir ErdenFundamentals of Engineering6 Definition of Engineering 4 "Engineering is the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences, gained by study, experience and practice, is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize economically the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind".
7
Abdulkadir ErdenFundamentals of Engineering7 Definition of Engineering 5 "Anything that is theoretically possible will be achieved in practice, no matter what the technical difficulties, if it is desired greatly enough" [Clarke 1976]. Engineering is the process of overcoming these technical difficulties.

13
Abdulkadir ErdenFundamentals of Engineering13 Machine Design Machine Design is a process of selecting the proper machine components for a predetermined function. To clarify this definition, machine is defined as a system of machine elements selected or designed for a specific function.

15
Abdulkadir ErdenFundamentals of Engineering15 Mechatronics As microprocessor applications are introduced in product development, the overall design concept began to integrate mechanical, electrical and computer technology into a simple product. Mechatronics is considered in its broader sense as the name given to a special philosophy behind the design and development of microprocessor- based products. The reflection of mechatronics philosophy on the design methodology of these products is defined as the mechatronic design.
