The “Tuning Texas” Initiative Facilitating the Preparedness and Transfer of Students from 2-Year to 4-Year Institutions in High-Need and High-Demand Disciplines: An Update A Project Conducted by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board With Support from Lumina Foundation for Education 26 January 2012

Tuning Texas Education—26 th January 2012 What is Tuning? Tuning Texas Tuning is a faculty-led process designed to provide an indication of the knowledge, skills, and abilities students should achieve prior to graduation at different degree levels. Faculty create a framework that establishes clear learning expectations for students in each subject area while balancing the need among programs to retain their academic autonomy and flexibility.

Tuning Texas Education—26 th January 2012 The Educational Pyramid The knowledge, skills and attitudes developed are solidified, applied, and enhanced through professional experience and lifelong learning. Experience Post-graduate education is a transition between the bachelor’s degree and advanced professional practice, providing technical depth. Post-Graduate Education The foundational knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for professional practice and advanced study are developed. Bachelor’s Degree The basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for study are developed. Secondary Education Associate's Degree Tuning Texas

Tuning Texas Education—26 th January 2012 An Important Outcome Higher Education Industrial Experience Institutions Secondary Education Programs of Study Emphasis is on selection of the “right” courses. Emphasis is on the transferability of courses. Vertical and horizontal curriculum alignment to enhance transferability. Tuning Texas

Tuning Texas Education—26 th January 2012 Review of the Charges to the Councils  Develop outcome-based discipline specific body of knowledge profiles with expected levels of competency for each degree level;  Support the THECB conduct surveys to obtain input from students and employers;  Map employability of graduates to positions in the labor market; and  Identify lower-division coursework at community colleges leading to baccalaureate study at 4-year institutions.
