LOYALIST PATRIOT Loyal to Great Britain and the crown Did NOT want to fight for independence Frustrations with Great Britain were too great Were ready to move forward and become and independent nation

1 st Continental Congress ◦ Held in 1774 in Philadelphia ◦ GA was the only to not send a delegate ◦ Didn’t all want the same goal, some wanted independence while others wanted reconciliation ◦ They did agree to at least tell the King why they were upset ◦ If things didn’t get better, they would meet in a year.

2 nd Continental Congress ◦ Held in Philadelphia in 1775 ◦ Battles in Lexington and Concord prompted a new spirit of independence among most members ◦ Created an army and started printing own money ◦ Sent the Olive Branch Petition for one last ditch effort at a peaceful resolution ◦ King George declared the colonies to be in a state of rebellion ◦ Finally decided to write the Declaration of Independence

An event known as Shays’ Rebellion occurred causing many to realize that the new AoC were not going to work. A small group of farmers caused chaos in Massachusetts over land taxes and the new government couldn’t put down this simple rebellion…how would they defend themselves against other countries?!? This led to our next chapter…the writing of the U.S. Constitution!
