Scottish inventor James Watt was born in 1736 was most renowned for his invented rendition of the steam engine. This spurned the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, and the Metric Unit for Power was named after him. The “Watt”.

Power The Watt is equal to one Joule per second, and it takes 746 watts to make one “horsepower”.

Horsepower The Bugatti Veyron produces 1001 hp. It has 12 cylinders, 8 radiators, and at top speed consumes 2 gallons of fuel every minute! Given the power output of the Veyron, and a curb weight of 1,888 kgs, determine the time it takes the car to go 0 - 60 mph.

Horsepower The Veyron’s actual 0-60 time is 2.4 seconds. How efficient does that make the engine?

Homework Look up the horsepower rating for your own car and come up with power equivalence. Ex: My 2009 Subaru Outback could power 1,268 100 Watt light-bulbs.

House Power The measurement that power companies use for gauging energy usage is the Kilowatt hour kWhr. How is this a measurement of energy? Is this a fair measurement for power companies to use? How many Joules is it?

Homework The measurement that power companies use for gauging energy usage is the Kilowatt hour kWhr. Take a look at your families energy bill, and give me an energy equivalence. Ex: The energy my family uses in a month could lift my car 200,000 feet in the air.

Homework Appliances Look up the average power usages of the appliances you have in your house. Give me an energy equivalence for how much they consume in one day. Ex: If we turned off my washer, dryer, fridge, and TV, we would save the same amount of energy as my car has traveling 20 miles per hour.

Car Problem The average gallon of gasoline contains 1.3x10 8 Joules! That’s a lot, but keep in mind, your car is only about 30-40% efficient. Knowing or guestimating the mass of your car, how much gasoline do you go through every time you go from 0-60mph?

Bulldozer Problem If a bulldozer produces 460 hp, and has a top speed of 16 mph, what is the maximum force it can produce at this speed? What is one way to get the bulldozer to produce more force?

Arc Reactor Tony Stark said that the Mark I arc reactor could produce 3 Gigajoules per second. Yensin then said it was enough to power a heart for fifty lifetimes. The human heart uses about 1 watt of power. What should he actually have said?
