Nearly all of the energy stored on earth originally came from the sun. Every day the sun provides us with billions of kilojoules of light energy, which powers our planet. Plants are able to harness this energy, using a special chemical reaction called “Photosynthesis”. The light energy helps to convert water and carbon dioxide into stored chemical energy called Glucose. Student Reading Activity Source of Energy

Learning Activity Source of Energy The earth is provided with energy from the ____. This energy is ______ into chemical energy by _______ and algae. To do this, the plants and the algae need _______ and _______. They then carry out a chemical reaction called _________. This converts the ___________ into chemical energy. Level 5- I re-wrote the sentences in my own words.

Teacher Explanation The sun powers us! Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can be transferred. All animals on earth rely on plants to supply them with their energy, even if they don’t eat plants directly. Plants transfer the sun’s light energy into chemical energy. This chemical energy is then passed on to the goat eating the leaf and then into the milk, which the human consumes.

Learning activity The sun powers us! Arrange the following images in order of how the suns energy is transferred into Lion. Then add an explanation to go with your flow diagram.

Not Powered by the Sun Geothermal Nuclear Tidal Power Learning Activity This energy source uses energy stored in uranium, a metal found deep inside the earth. This energy source is caused by the gravitational pull of the moon. This energy source uses heat from underground rock and can be found near volcanoes. Energy source Match the three energy sources to the sources of their power. Remember these three energy source are not powered by the sun. A B C

Quick Check Questions Level 4: Describe how plants get their chemical energy. Level 5: Energy stored in cornflakes originally came from the sun. Explain how it got there. Level 6: Bunsen burners uses energy stored in natural gas. Explain where this energy came from originally, and how it came to be stored in the gas. Learning Activity

Plenary Self Assessment Activity I can describe the formation of coal, oil, and natural gas. I can name 5 different energy sources and describe how each one works. I can define the terms “renewable energy” and “non renewable energy”, and I can explain advantages and disadvantages of each. I can compare the energy requirements of different individuals. I can explain that the sun is the original source of most of the energy sources on earth.
